Job description

Are you interested in doing your thesis with us at AFRY Nuclear?

AFRY is one of the world's largest consulting companies and has been active in the Swedish nuclear power industry since the first reactors were built in Sweden and is today one of the Swedish nuclear power industry's most important partners. We help our customers to develop methods for sustainable and safe nuclear power, and run assignments in all phases of nuclear power - from new construction and modernization to life extension, dismantling and demolition.

We are now looking for you who will complete a degree project in the spring of 2026 starting in January (equivalent to 30 credits) and who are studying the Master's program in Energy Systems, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems in Technology and Society, Industrial Economics, or equivalent. The thesis is suitable for those with an interest in one or more of the areas below:

  • Reactor physics
  • Nuclear physics
  • Nuclear chemistry
  • Nuclear safety
  • Environmental engineering
  • Computational engineering

We plan to conduct one or two thesis projects, and suggest the topics below:

  • Identifying the Best Available Technique (BAT) of today in the world for the treatment of liquid/liquid-borne waste
  • Scatter calculations with AFRY intelligent scenario modeling (AISM) in contaminated soil
  • AISM calculation by modeling the human body and processes, such as radiation dose to specific parts of the body
  • Dispersion modeling of a severe accident at a floating nuclear power plant
  • Scatter calculations using source term from hypothetical reactor accident at an SMR
  • AISM - Dose impact from normal release from SMR on floating platform placed partly in a lake, partly in a marine environment

The idea is that the thesis partly takes a holistic approach to the current specialty area and partly focuses more deeply in a few selected areas in consultation with the supervisor. You have the opportunity to influence the choice of thesis, and if you have your own idea for a thesis, we are happy to discuss it and see if it can be suitable for our business and identified needs in the future.

The thesis can be carried out by one or two students, where a suitable division into work areas is determined in consultation based on educational focus and interest. It is possible to apply for the thesis in pairs, but the choice of student(s) will be made on an individual basis. Support will be provided by a team of different experts, with a designated official supervisor at AFRY, within the Nuclear Safety and Licensing section.

The thesis will be performed at our office in Solna.

Qualifications

The thesis is aimed at those who are in the final stages of their civil engineering education in one of the above-mentioned specializations. You have good knowledge of both Swedish and English. If you have taken courses in nuclear power, modeling and / or programming, we see it as a merit.

As a person, the most important thing for us is that you recognize yourself in our values Brave, Devoted, Teamplayers that unite us at AFRY. This means that we like to collaborate with each other and create good relationships, and that we are driven and curious to constantly learn new things. Supporting, communicating and sharing knowledge is a big part of the culture at AFRY.

Further information

During this thesis you will have the opportunity to deepen both your knowledge and understanding of the nuclear industry in an international technology and engineering company. You will learn from both experienced nuclear experts and from colleagues from other areas of expertise. The thesis also forms a basis for a possible future recruitment to AFRY. As an employee with us, you get to take part in a modern workplace in a global context with forward thinking and security in the form of collective agreements and staff benefits such as health care contributions, benefits portal, occupational pension and membership of our staff club Club AFRY. We value further development and invest in our employees and have individual development plans where you get the opportunity to take development courses and certifications within the framework of your service and your career goals.

AFRY is ranked as one of Sweden's most popular employers among engineers and we would like to show you why!
