Job Description
AFRY is Sweden’s leading consulting firm in the nuclear power industry, and we are always striving to expand and strengthen our expertise. We are now looking for a civil engineering student interested in completing their thesis with us at AFRY Nuclear. The thesis project described below is a proposal from us, to be carried out in collaboration with Chalmers.
Background, Objectives, and Proposed Method
Recently, interest in nuclear power plants—and more specifically, small modular reactors (SMRs)—has grown. One of the Swedish companies that has shown interest in building SMRs is Blykalla, which is currently developing a reactor called SEALER.
This thesis examines how radioactive substances are dispersed in the environment in the event of a severe reactor accident involving a SEALER reactor. In Sweden, there is a requirement that a three-level probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) be performed for each reactor. Level 1 calculates the probability of core damage, Level 2 calculates the probability of a radioactive release, and Level 3 calculates how such a release might spread. AFRY’s AISM software is well-suited for performing Level 3 PSA calculations and will be used in this thesis project.
During this thesis project, you will investigate what a release from a SEALER reactor might look like, develop a model in AISM to calculate dispersion and doses to the public based on weather patterns and location, and perform sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. Since there is currently little data available on what a release from a SEALER might look like, you will need to work with your academic advisor to develop a plan for how to make a qualified estimate of the source term. The specific focus of the thesis can be tailored depending on where your greatest interest lies.
Qualifications
This thesis is suitable for you if you are interested in nuclear power, radiochemistry, and/or simulations. You are in the final stage of your Master of Science in Engineering program and plan to complete your thesis, equivalent to 30 HP, in the spring of 2027.
You are studying physics, chemistry, or energy engineering. If you have taken courses in nuclear chemistry or nuclear safety, that is a plus. You can express yourself fluently in both Swedish and English, both verbally and in writing.
As a person, the most important thing for us is that you identify with our core values—Brave, Devoted, and Teamplayers—which unite us at AFRY. This means we enjoy collaborating and sharing knowledge, and that we are driven and eager to constantly learn new things.
The work will be carried out at our office in Gothenburg in combination with work at Chalmers. We consider it a major plus if you’re able to be present at the office at least two days a week, where you’ll have your supervisor to support you.
Additional Information
A thesis project at AFRY Nuclear offers you the opportunity to deepen both your knowledge and understanding of the nuclear power industry. In addition to collaborating with experienced nuclear power experts, you’ll also have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from other fields of expertise.
A thesis project at AFRY can serve as a foundation for future employment. As an employee with us, you’ll be part of a modern workplace in a global context that’s forward-thinking and offers security through collective bargaining agreements and employee benefits such as wellness allowances, an occupational pension, and membership in our fantastic employee association, Club AFRY.
