AFRY has a global reach with deep roots in the Nordic region. Together, we’re accelerating the transition to a more sustainable society.

Job Description

Would you like to complete your thesis on nuclear safety at one of the world’s leading engineering consulting firms? Then this could be the opportunity for you!

AFRY Nuclear has been active in the Swedish nuclear power industry since the first reactors were built in Sweden. Today, we are one of the Swedish nuclear power industry’s most important partners. We help our clients develop methods for sustainable and safe nuclear power and carry out projects in all phases of the nuclear power lifecycle—from new construction and modernization to lifetime extension, decommissioning, and demolition.

At AFRY, we always strive to expand and strengthen our expertise, and we are now looking for one or two master’s students in engineering who would like to complete their thesis with us. This thesis project is ideal for you if you’re interested in reactor physics, nuclear physics, nuclear chemistry, nuclear safety, and/or environmental engineering. Examples of previous projects and proposals include:

  • Modeling the dispersion of radionuclides from an SMR in a marine environment
  • Licensing and requirements for planning an interim storage facility for radioactive waste
  • Dispersion modeling of releases from a hypothetical nuclear accident
  • Load tracking and power control using nuclear power, with a focus on SMRs
  • Sweden’s future uranium needs, with a fleet of SMRs
  • Modeling of weather-dependent radionuclide deposition using AFRY Intelligent Scenario Modeling (AISM)
  • Assessment of sampling and data requirements for environmental monitoring around SMRs—comparison of SMRs and full-scale nuclear power plants
  • Assessment of risks to the natural environment (non-human biota) from SMRs, compared to full-scale nuclear power plants

The idea is that the thesis projects will both take a comprehensive approach to the relevant specialized field and delve deeper into a couple of selected areas in consultation with the advisor. If you have your own idea for a thesis project, we’d be happy to discuss it and see if it aligns with our operations and identified future needs.

You’ll be supported by a team of various experts, with an official supervisor at AFRY within the Nuclear Safety and Licensing section. The project will begin no earlier than Week 3 of 2027 and be carried out during the spring (equivalent to 30 HP). The position is based at our headquarters in Solna.

Qualifications

This thesis project is intended for students in the final stages of their master’s degree in Energy Systems, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems in Technology and Society, Industrial Economics, or equivalent. You have an interest in some of the above-mentioned areas and in getting to know a large international technology and engineering company. You can express yourself fluently in both Swedish and English, both verbally and in writing. If you have taken courses in nuclear power, we consider that a plus.

As a person, the most important thing for us is that you identify with our core values—Brave, Devoted, and Teamplayers—which unite us at AFRY. This means we enjoy collaborating and sharing knowledge, and that we’re driven and curious to constantly learn new things.

Additional Information

A thesis project at AFRY Nuclear offers you the opportunity to deepen both your knowledge and understanding of the nuclear power industry. In addition to collaborating with experienced nuclear power experts, you’ll also have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from other areas of expertise.

A thesis project also serves as a foundation for potential future employment. As an employee at AFRY, we offer a modern workplace in a global context with a forward-thinking culture and security in the form of collective bargaining agreements and employee benefits such as a wellness allowance and a benefits portal with a variety of discounts. We invest in our employees and have individual development plans that give you the opportunity to take developmental courses and pursue certifications within the scope of your role and your career goals. Our employee club organizes social activities both in and outside the office. Everything from ski trips and cabin rentals to singing in a choir and playing board games—there’s something for everyone.

Before applying:

Please indicate in your application which 1–3 areas or suggestions you are most interested in, or propose your own idea. It is possible to apply for the thesis project as a pair, but please submit separate applications.

The application deadline is November 22, 2026.
