Description of Operations

The Social Services Department of Gällivare Municipality is responsible for social services and municipal health care. The department is in the midst of a comprehensive transformation focused on quality, follow-up, workforce development, and improved work methods in line with the new Social Services Act.

We are now seeking a social worker for our school social services team as part of an initiative where schools and social services work together to strengthen children’s opportunities to succeed in school and in life. You will be organizationally placed within social services, and your immediate supervisor will be the Director of Children and Youth Services. Your primary workplace will be in a school setting, where you will work closely with school staff, student health services, and guardians. You will be part of a close collaboration between social services and the school. With us, you’ll have the opportunity to work in an exciting school social work team while enjoying the security of a permanent position within the Children and Youth division. The project runs through December 31, 2026, and we naturally hope for a continuation, but regardless of the project’s future, you will have a permanent position as a social worker within the department.

Job Responsibilities

The role involves building trust, establishing a presence, and contributing to a sense of security in everyday life. You are organizationally placed within social services but will be based in a school setting, where you will work closely with school staff, student health services, and guardians. In this role, you will focus on prevention and relationship-building. You will meet with children and families in their daily lives, identify signs early on, and provide support before challenges escalate. The work involves close collaboration with multiple stakeholders and requires both structure and flexibility.

You will:

  • collaborate with guardians, the school, student health services, and other stakeholders
  • identify children and students in need of support at an early stage
  • provide advice, support, and short-term interventions to children and families
  • work to increase school attendance and reverse negative trends
  • participate in and lead collaboration meetings
  • work in a structured manner with assessment, planning, and follow-up
  • contribute to developing working methods and approaches within the team

Interventions take place at both the individual and group levels, always with the child’s best interests in mind.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a degree in social work and experience in social work, preferably in the field of children and youth. You have a good understanding of social services’ mandate and legislation and thrive in collaboration with other professions. Experience in preventive work or school-based social work is a plus.

As a person, you are confident and good at building relationships. You have the ability to build trust when interacting with children and guardians and are both responsive and clear in your communication. You work in a structured manner but are flexible when the situation requires it, and you actively contribute to both your own work and the team’s development. You have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and thrive in collaboration with managers, colleagues, and political representatives. Great importance is placed on personal suitability. Under the National Minority Language Act, Gällivare Municipality is the administrative municipality for Sami, Meänkieli, and Finnish. Knowledge of any of these languages is a plus when applying for a position with Gällivare Municipality.
