Description of Operations

The Functional Support Department offers support and services to children, youth, and adults with disabilities. We work in accordance with the Act Concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments (LSS) and the Social Services Act to strengthen individuals’ independence, security, and participation.  The department provides daily activities, special-service housing, housing for social support, supported and service-based housing, short-term housing for children, recreational activities, respite and companion services, and personal assistance.

Job Responsibilities

Solkatten provides two types of services. Short-term supervision/recreational activities for school-age youth starting in the calendar year the individual turns 13, as well as short-term stays. Children and youth are entitled to short-term supervision/recreational activities before and after school, during school holidays, study days, and longer breaks such as summer vacation. Short-term stays offer individuals a change of environment, a meaningful experience both individually and in a group, and respite for family members. Solkatten’s short-term stays and short-term supervision programs serve individuals who receive services under the LSS. The role of the special education teacher is to work, based on each individual’s needs, circumstances, and interests, to develop their ability and opportunity for independence and participation in society through appropriately designed support, guidance, and educational methods. You will be responsible for educational planning in consultation with other staff members and the unit manager. The position includes collaboration and the exchange of experiences with other support educators within the LSS framework, with the aim of developing educational approaches and methods.

Qualifications

You have training as a support educator, special education teacher, recreation educator, or other training deemed equivalent by the employer. Experience within the LSS field is preferred. Under the National Minority Language Act, Gällivare Municipality is the administrative municipality for Sami, Meänkieli, and Finnish. Knowledge of any of these languages is a plus when applying for a position with Gällivare Municipality. You are a stable and reliable person who remains calm and acts with composure in challenging situations. You are a predictable presence in the individual’s daily life and meet them where they are. We place great importance on your flexibility, willingness to collaborate, and commitment to fostering good relationships with colleagues, family members, and guardians. The role involves planning and carrying out activities together with service users. Job duties may involve participating in activities of varying nature.

A Class B driver’s license and a criminal background check are required.

Work Hours/Duration

Permanent, full-time position (100%). Shifts include days, evenings, and weekends. A probationary period may apply.
