Description of Operations

Student health services should be viewed as an area of operation that includes medical, psychological, psychosocial, and special education interventions and is part of the school’s educational mission and its overall efforts to promote good health. The emphasis should be on promotion and prevention, and these efforts should be conducted in a health-promoting manner using an inclusive approach. We currently have 5 school counselors working at all of the municipality’s elementary schools and Lapplands Gymnasium.

In the municipality of Gällivare, there are a total of 9 elementary schools, both in the central town and throughout our rural villages. In addition to certified teachers, Gällivare Municipality’s elementary schools also have lead teachers, special education teachers, school counselors, school nurses, homeroom teachers, and student assistants/resource teachers. In grades 1–6, our schools also have class mentors, and in the town center, there are school hosts for grades 7–9.

Job Responsibilities

You will be part of the municipality’s central student health services team; your colleagues in this department include other school counselors, school nurses, school doctors, special education teachers, school psychologists, and administrative staff. Close and collaborative teamwork within the central student health services is an important and fundamental part of the job. You will be assigned to one of the municipality’s schools. There, you will work alongside the school nurse and with support from colleagues at other schools. The job requires you to be independent and able to make sound decisions in difficult situations.

The work of a school counselor is varied and involves student counseling, guidance, consultation, professional development initiatives, crisis intervention, social assessments, developing action plans, and providing support to students, parents, educators, and principals. We have begun offering social well-being consultations at the schools.

You will work at Myran School and Maria School and assist other counselors in their respective areas. You will be part of the school’s local student health team at Myran and Maria School. You will also collaborate with external partners such as social services, child and adolescent psychiatry, and pediatric rehabilitation.

Qualifications

Degree in social work. Experience working with children and adolescents is a plus.

Great importance is placed on personal suitability. The work is independent and requires that you be able to act independently and responsibly. It is important that you have strong collaboration and teamwork skills.

Strong communication skills and social competence are of the utmost importance. You are positive, solution-oriented, and able to take the initiative when needed. At the same time, you are a team player and collaborate with the school nurses at your schools as well as other student health services.

A diploma and a police background check are required for employment. A driver’s license is required for this position.

Work Hours/Duration

This is a full-time (100%) position starting December 1, 2026, and running through June 20, 2027. An extension may be possible.
