About the position

The Faculty of Teacher Education and Pedagogy is looking for an ambitious and inspiring Head of Department. The Head of Department has overall responsibility for the department and reports to the Dean. As head of department, you are part of the faculty's management team and, as part of the faculty's management, are responsible for the faculty's activities and development. You are expected to collaborate closely with the dean's office, head of externally funded activities, heads of study programmes, other members of the management team and the faculty administration.

As head of department at the University of Inland Norway, you are expected to contribute actively to the work on the university's goals and strategies, build a culture of trust, respect and constructive dialogue between academic environments and organizational units, and further develop an organizational culture characterized by gender equality, diversity and equality.

The head of department position is a four-year fixed-term position with the possibility of re-employment up to two times (a total of up to 12 years). The position is 100%. Commencement by agreement.


About the Department of Education - Lillehammer

The Department of Education currently has 31 man-years of professional staff. The employees cover a number of disciplines that are oriented towards educational knowledge: educational psychology, educational history, educational sociology, educational philosophy, educational policy development, media pedagogy, special education, counseling and guidance, as well as educational management. The department is characterized by a high level of research activity.

The department offers studies in pedagogy and special education as year-long studies, bachelor's and master's programs in addition to further education. The department is located in Lillehammer.


Responsibilities and duties

As head of department, you will have overall responsibility for the department's strategic and operational activities. Among your most important responsibilities are:

  • academic and administrative responsibility for the department, delegated by the dean, to whom you report
  • strategic and operational responsibility for the department's academic activities in education, internal and external dissemination, research and development work and externally funded activities
  • responsibility for effective financial and resource management at the department, in accordance with established frameworks and strategic guidelines internally and externally
  • follow up and develop the department's employees, contribute to appropriate organization, and conduct strategic competence and staffing planning
  • strengthen the faculty's strategic initiatives in education, research, competence development and sustainability in close collaboration with the faculty's management team
  • contribute to promoting collaboration across academic environments internally and externally, and contribute to the university's strategic objectives
  • contribute to strengthening study quality and student participation
  • contribute to the university's work on gender equality, diversity and a good learning and working environment.

As head of department, we want you to participate actively in the department's research and development activities, and time for research and/or development work is part of the position. As Head of Department, you are expected to actively contribute to the university's social mission, among other things by facilitating sustainable perspectives in research, education and dissemination. As head of department, in consultation with the dean, you will be responsible for the appropriate organization of work tasks at the department. You will be able to delegate selected management tasks to subject coordinators/other employees, and you will receive assistance from administrative support functions at the institution.

Other tasks may be added to the position as needed.


Qualifications

As head of department, you must have

  • high scientific expertise, preferably at doctoral level or equivalent expertise in one of the department's subject areas. (In special cases, particularly relevant management experience may compensate for parts of the requirement)
  • good digital skills and experience with the development and use of digital tools in education and research
  • very good communication skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, and English

Desired experience and insight

It is an advantage if you have:

  • relevant management experience from knowledge organizations, preferably with responsibility for education, research and development work. Leadership experience from higher education is desirable
  • experience with change management and development processes
  • experience with personnel management
  • insight into national and international trends in higher education and research
  • knowledge of financial management and management principles in the public sector

Personal qualities:

We want a Head of Department who:

  • is able to exercise both strategic and operational leadership, with good system, organizational and business understanding
  • is enterprising, development-oriented with great implementation ability and ability to prioritize
  • has good communication and collaboration skills and is good at building teams and networks regionally, nationally and internationally
  • is clear, motivating and inclusive in his/her leadership style and is committed to developing professional learning communities, the working environment and the individual employee

The assessment of which candidate is best qualified is based on a comprehensive assessment of education, experience and personal suitability and other qualification requirements as formulated in the ad text, in addition to motivation for the position.

The position and duties must be performed in accordance with applicable laws and regulations for government employees, including the Act on Control of Exports of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology, etc. Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, come into conflict with the criteria in the latter Act, may not take up the position. Necessary approvals must be maintained throughout the employment relationship.
