The Archaeology Section has an opening for an archaeologist (advisor/senior advisor) in a full-time, permanent position starting January 1, 2027

About the Section

  • Innlandet County Council has two Cultural Heritage Sections: one for archaeology and one for buildings and landscapes. The sections are responsible for fulfilling the county council’s role as the regional cultural heritage authority. This includes safeguarding regional and national cultural heritage interests, providing expert advice on cultural heritage to municipalities and property owners, and conducting outreach, knowledge-building, and development work based on cultural heritage. The sections have a special responsibility for automatically protected cultural heritage sites, as well as buildings protected by regulation or by administrative decision. The county government is responsible for safeguarding cultural heritage from both a development and a conservation perspective. The sections collaborate closely with national and regional authorities, municipalities, museums, property owners, and the nonprofit sector. Through the regional reform, the county government has been assigned new responsibilities in the field of cultural heritage. The sections currently have 28 permanent employees who form a broad professional community in the field of cultural heritage

  • The Archaeology Section works on monitoring automatically protected cultural heritage sites, as well as protected and conservation-worthy structures and roads from more recent times, value-creation and adaptation projects, cultural-historical landscapes, and collaboration with the region’s museums.

About the position

  • 100% permanent position available starting January 1, 2027
  • The successful candidate will be assigned a job code based on the position’s requirements, education, and experience, in accordance with applicable laws and agreements
  • The section is based in Lillehammer, but we can offer various forms of flexibility for candidates with the right qualifications

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitoring cultural heritage interests in planning and building cases, agricultural cases, etc., primarily related to automatically protected cultural heritage sites
  • Exemptions under the Cultural Heritage Act
  • Fieldwork and follow-up of fieldwork
  • Parts of the position are linked to the rock archaeology preservation program, and you should expect extended periods in the field and irregular working hours during the season. This work is physically demanding
  • Communication work both in the office and in the field, filming and conducting interviews in the field, managing Facebook and other platforms, including producing content and moderating comment sections
  • Opportunity to participate in the section’s development and organizational efforts

Desired qualifications

  • Experience in cultural heritage work and case management within public administration
  • A good understanding of planning processes, as well as relevant legislation such as the Cultural Heritage Act and the Planning and Building Act
  • Experience with archaeological fieldwork in challenging conditions
  • Experience with archaeological preservation work, including the collection and surveying of artifacts
  • Experience with communication work, including preparing and following up on cases before, during, and after publication

Qualification Requirements

  • Master’s degree in archaeology
  • Experience with archaeological fieldwork
  • Experience with case management of land-use planning matters
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in Norwegian
  • Driver’s license
