Are you the one?

with a focus on new computational and data representation methods for efficient artificial intelligence

Would you like to advance your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is a given? With us, you’ll work alongside dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy excellent opportunities to secure external funding. You’ll be given the freedom to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large.Luleå University of Technology is in a phase of expansion and is undertaking an initiative to strengthen research and education in computer science, with a particular focus on algorithms, data structures, and advanced computational models.

Computer science is a rapidly growing and evolving field that forms the foundation of today’s and tomorrow’s digital society. Developments in artificial intelligence, large-scale data management, and distributed systems are placing increased demands on new ways of representing, processing, and interpreting information.

To meet these challenges, research and education are needed that combine classical computational models with new approaches to computation and representation, particularly in high-dimensional and complex data environments. This initiative is directly related to the university’s computer science environment and offers excellent opportunities for synergy with research groups in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber-physical systems, and data-intensive applications. We therefore consider a focus on the research and development of new methods for the representation, processing, and analysis of complex information to be important. These methods range from fundamental research at the methodological level—such as algorithm development and models for efficient information representation—to applied research in collaboration with other groups.

The Department of Computer Science at the Department of Systems and Space Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, is now seeking an Assistant Professor to contribute to our growing program.

Program Description

Computer Science encompasses research on algorithms, data structures, computational models, and software engineering for the development of resource-efficient, distributed, and intelligent systems with applications in the digital infrastructure of the future. The department also has a special responsibility for pedagogical development in the fundamentals of computer science.

Job Responsibilities

The assistant professor will be involved in the university’s educational programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, the position involves pedagogical development work and research, primarily in new approaches to computation and data representation, particularly in high-dimensional and complex data environments, but also in other subfields of computer science based on the candidate’s own research interests and ongoing research projects.

Qualifications

To be eligible for appointment as an assistant professor, the applicant must

  • have earned a doctoral degree, or hold a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree

Preference will be given to candidates who have earned a doctoral degree no more than five years prior to the application deadline. However, candidates who earned a doctoral degree or attained equivalent qualifications earlier may also be considered if there are special circumstances. Special reasons refer to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Evaluation Criteria

The following evaluation criteria apply to this position:

  • scientific competence
  • other evaluation criteria

The following other evaluation criteria are weighted equally:

Other evaluation criteria:

  • the level of expertise required for eligibility
  • documented scientific expertise through publications as first author in high-quality scientific journals and conferences
  • documented research mobility, for example through a postdoctoral fellowship or other research stay at an international university or research environment with a high scientific profile
  • administrative skills relevant to the subject matter and the duties included in the position
  • ability to engage with the surrounding community
  • ability to communicate about research and development work
  • ability to teach in Swedish

Term of Employment

This position is for a term of four years.

Promotion to Associate Professor

The purpose of the position is to provide the faculty member with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to establish a track record in both research and teaching in order to meet the eligibility requirements for a position as a university lecturer.

An assistant associate professor shall, upon application, be promoted to associate professor and granted a permanent appointment if he or she is qualified for a position as associate professor, and is deemed suitable for such a position following an evaluation based on the assessment criteria specified below.

For the evaluation, the assistant lecturer must have completed higher education pedagogy training equivalent to 7.5 credits or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.

During the period of employment, the assistant associate professor must also have contributed independently, to a significant extent, and with high quality to the university’s research, as well as demonstrated good teaching skills.
