Would you like to advance your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is a given? With us, you’ll work alongside dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy excellent opportunities to secure external funding. You’ll have the freedom to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large.
The Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) program at Luleå University of Technology is expanding its activities in the areas of distributed and decentralized architectures, industrial digitalization, decision support systems, and adaptive cyber-physical infrastructures in close collaboration with Swedish and European industry.
This recruitment is strategically important for strengthening research and teaching in areas related to distributed systems, scalable loggers, industrial planning automation, and formal methods. In addition, several senior researchers are expected to retire within the next five years, creating a need to ensure long-term capacity in research, supervision, external funding, and teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
Program Description
Cyber-physical systems focus on integrated software and application architectures with implementations of highly distributed embedded systems that interact with each other and their environment to enable secure, goal-oriented, autonomous, and evolvable solutions.
Job Responsibilities
The position involves research, teaching, and pedagogical development within the subject area. The goal is for the duties to be distributed as approximately 65% research and doctoral supervision and 35% undergraduate teaching and supervision. The research component will primarily involve collaborative projects with Swedish and European industry, combining applied research with scientific methods and experimental research in computer science, particularly in distributed systems, scalable systems, industrial digitalization, decision support systems, and the automation of manufacturing planning processes. The research is expected to encompass both theoretical and practical aspects, including the use of formal methods. The teaching component will primarily cover areas related to the evaluation criteria, including formal methods, distributed computing, software development, and industrial digitalization. Teaching may take place at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The position also involves contributing to the development of research proposals and applications for external research funding at both the national and European levels.
Qualifications
To be eligible for appointment as an assistant professor, the applicant must
Preference will be given to candidates who have earned a doctoral degree no more than five years prior to the application deadline. However, candidates who earned a doctoral degree or attained equivalent qualifications earlier may also be considered if there are special circumstances. Special reasons refer to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
Evaluation Criteria
The following evaluation criteria apply to this position:
The following additional evaluation criteria apply to this position: weighted equally
Emphasis will be placed on scientific and pedagogical potential in distributed computing, scalable cluster technology, and industrial planning automation. Experience with industrial collaboration, interdisciplinary research environments, and the ability to communicate research results and software-related development work to both academic and industrial audiences will be considered important qualifications.
Desirable qualifications include documented expertise in distributed systems, blockchain technology, scalable transaction processing, industrial automation, assembly line planning, and decision support systems. Experience in interdisciplinary research combining computer science and industrial engineering is considered particularly valuable. Experience collaborating with industry, particularly in manufacturing, digitalization, or automation initiatives, as well as international research experience, is also considered a merit.
Term of Employment
This position is for a term of four years.
Eligibility for Promotion to Associate Professor
The purpose of the appointment is to provide the faculty member with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to establish a track record in both research and teaching in order to meet the eligibility requirements for a position as a university lecturer.
An assistant university lecturer shall, upon application, be promoted to university lecturer and granted a permanent appointment if he or she is qualified for a position as a lecturer, and is deemed suitable for such a position following an evaluation based on the assessment criteria specified below.
For the evaluation, the assistant lecturer must have completed higher education pedagogy training equivalent to 7.5 credits or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.
During the period of employment, the assistant associate professor must also have contributed independently, to a significant extent, and with high quality to the university’s research, as well as demonstrated good teaching skills.
