Luleå University of Technology is growing rapidly with world-leading expertise in several research areas. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of over SEK 2.3 billion. We have more than 1,800 employees and almost 21,600 students. The research subject Solid Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology is a modern subject that uses analytical, experimental and numerical methods. Our research ranges from more basic science-oriented research to more applied research. We collaborate with researchers and industries both nationally and internationally. Teaching is given on several engineering programs with emphasis on mechanical engineering. Solid mechanics is a central subject in the field of mechanical engineering and one of the most important subjects for the MSc in Mechanical Engineering. The subject also has good research training. Activities include the development of analytical, experimental and numerical methods in solid and structural mechanics. Important research areas are modeling and simulation for the prediction of manufacturing processes and product performance, with particular focus on the development of material models for both solid and granular materials behavior and their interaction. There is a well-developed laboratory for calibration and validation of models with special focus on dynamic processes involving very high loading rates and temperatures. The group consists of about 20 employees, it is an established group with a good balance between PhD students and seniors. Several adjunct professors from industry and European institutes are also associated with the subject.
Subject description
Solid mechanics includes the development of analytical, experimental and numerical methods in engineering mechanics. Important research areas are modeling and simulation with respect to prediction of manufacturing processes and product performance, with particular focus on the development of models for both solid and granular materials behavior and their interaction.
Work tasks
As an Associate Professor in Solid Mechanics you are expected to actively contribute in both teaching and research. Promotion of collaborations with national and international research groups and interaction with local society and industry is also important. The tasks also include being an assistant supervisor of PhD students and generally contributing to the development of the subject and the department, as well as working actively with external funding of research and publication. During the employment period, merit will be made for examination to senior lecturer. The research will be focused on the automotive and steel industry as well as the aerospace industry where Solid Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology is well positioned. The research will be specialized in dynamic processes involving very high loading rates and temperatures and related advanced numerical modeling.
Eligibility
To fulfill the requirements for employment as Associate Senior Lecturer, the applicant must
- have a doctoral degree in solid mechanics or an equivalent research subject, or have a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree
Priority should be given to those who have completed a doctoral degree within five years of the application deadline. However, those who have completed a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons are defined as leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.
Assessment criteria
The following assessment criteria apply to the post:
- scientific excellence
- other assessment criteria which are ranked as follows
- Very good ability to perform and analyze mechanical testing including high strain rates
- Ability to teach in Swedish and English
- Knowledge of numerical methods such as nonlinear finite element analysis
- Be a good team player and have the ability to work independently
Most of the staff at the Solid Mechanics department are currently male, therefore we welcome female applicants.
Period of employment
The period of employment for this position is four years.
Examination for Senior Lecturer
The purpose of the employment is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop his/her independence as a researcher and to gain merit both scientifically and pedagogically in order to meet the requirements for eligibility for employment as a senior lecturer.
