Ph.D. Student in Electrical Power Engineering, ref. no. 4219-26

Electrical Power Engineering is part of the Energy Science Division at the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. Within Electrical Power Engineering, we collaborate closely with industry and government agencies, both in research projects and student projects. Our research meets high international standards and is conducted in collaboration with researchers around the world. In the field of power quality, the discipline enjoys a strong international reputation thanks to world-leading research.

Program Description

The Electrical Power Engineering research program encompasses studies of the systems for the generation, transmission, and use of electrical energy, as well as studies of the interactions between the power grid, power generation, and power consumption.

Project Description

This project focuses on the impact of voltage dips and transients on large electrical drive systems in modern facilities that support critical processes. The project will cover emission, propagation, and immunity: the source of the voltage dip or transient; how the event propagates from its source to the equipment terminals; and the event’s impact on the equipment, the facility, and the process. The study will include modeling the propagation of voltage dips and transients, modern facilities and processes, and modern electrical drive systems.

The project is a collaboration between LTU and Energiforsk.

Job Responsibilities

A doctoral position may involve both theoretical and practical work. As a doctoral student, you will receive training in scientific work through the publication of scientific articles in journals and presentations at national and international conferences. You will also take required and elective doctoral courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try your hand at teaching. As a researcher, you will work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a fantastic opportunity to learn how to lead challenging development projects. Your work will primarily involve theoretical models and simulations, but may also include measurements in both the laboratory and the field.

Qualifications

You are eligible to apply for this position if you hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree in engineering or an equivalent technical degree with a specialization relevant to research in electrical power engineering, such as electrical engineering, electronics, energy engineering, engineering physics, or similar fields.

Alternatively, a candidate meets the general eligibility requirements for doctoral-level education if he or she:

  • has completed an advanced-level degree,
  • has completed university studies totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at the advanced level, or
  • has otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge, either in Sweden or abroad.

Proficiency in both written and spoken English is required. Previous experience in research, development work, or research-oriented education in a field relevant to the duties of the position is considered an asset. In addition, the ability to contribute to the group’s teaching (in Swedish) is also considered an asset.
