The product and production development department at Luleå University of Technology is looking for two PhD students who want to work with laser processing. We are looking for committed people who are interested in conducting advanced experimental and theoretical research to study laser-based manufacturing processes within the framework of an international project with important industrial applications. Subject description Production development includes both individual processes and techniques for manufacturing, as well as the design of entire systems for industrial production. The group focuses on research in laser material processing, especially laser welding and additive manufacturing, as well as teaching in manufacturing and production. Project description You will participate in a Marie-Curie project 'Lasers4NetZero' regarding the use of lasers for material processing. The focus at Luleå University of Technology is on laser cutting and welding of bipolar plates for hydrogen-powered fuel cells. Furthermore, each of the employed PhD students will work on optimizing the material's response to heat input and tailoring material properties using different techniques: Ultrafast processing or laser beam forming. You will work in collaboration with the other PhD students within the project to define sensors, level of automation and perform sustainability analysis. Within the project, you will work 6 months abroad at Technische Universität Ilmenau, Germany (with process modeling) and do an internship at Jenoptik Automatisierungstechnik GmbH, Germany (regarding system integration) or Powerphotonic Limited, UK (regarding beamforming solutions). The mobility aspect of the project is not negotiable. You will be part of a cooperative research group that offers a friendly, inspiring atmosphere, high scientific level and opportunities for personal development. Job duties Your main tasks will be to carry out experimental and theoretical research in the field of laser material processing, to be published in peer-reviewed international journals and at national and international conferences, ultimately resulting in a summary thesis, your PhD thesis. The doctoral thesis must also be defended at the defense. To become a Doctor of Technology, you must also have read and been approved for 60 course credits. Qualifications To be qualified for the position, a master's degree (MSc or equivalent) in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering or a similar technical subject is required. Strong interest, curiosity and commitment to research together with personal qualities such as presentation skills, communication skills and analytical thinking are prerequisites for success in postgraduate education. A high level of spoken and written English is expected. Foreign candidates are also expected to show initiative and learn Swedish to a certain extent.
