Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of almost SEK 2.1 billion per year. We are currently 1,900 employees and have 18,700 students. In the coming years, billions of kronor will be invested in Norrbotten and Västerbotten in major projects aimed at a more sustainable society nationally as well as globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these highly topical research projects and the social transformation that follows. We have a wide range of programs to match the skills that are in demand. We hope that you will help us build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics at Luleå University of Technology is a multidisciplinary department with many internationally successful research groups and well-recognized educational programs. Energy Engineering at the Division of Energy Sciences has a close collaboration with companies and industries in both research projects and student projects. The research is of high international class and we collaborate with researchers worldwide. The division of energy science is looking for you who want to do a PhD in the subject area of energy technology. In your research, you will develop a new concept for the simultaneous production of aromatic compounds and H2 from lignin, focusing on the limiting anode side. Subject description Energy Technology covers the development of technologies and processes for sustainable energy supply. The research is focused on biofuel technology and energy efficient utilization in industry and society. Project description This is a four-year research project in collaboration with Umeå University. The aim is to develop electrochemical conversion of lignin and its derivatives. In this research we will use ionic liquids to promote dissolution and activation of lignin and its derivatives, develop nanostructured electrocatalysts (anodes), quantify energy, cost and environmental impact, and use machine learning. Work tasks The goal for you as a doctoral student is a doctoral degree according to the goals specified in the Higher Education Ordinance. In parallel with the thesis work, you will take courses as part of your doctoral education. Qualifications To be eligible for employment, you must have a Master's degree in electrochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, energy technology, or equivalent. You should have a good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. It is especially desirable that you have a strong interest in electrochemical processes. We especially value an applicant who enjoys working in teams and is prepared to take own initiatives. Previous experience in electrochemical transformations and/or ionic liquids is an advantage.
