Subject description
History encompasses the study of humanity with an emphasis on the development, organization and change of societies over time. The subject is particularly focused on research in the history of technology at the interface between natural resources, humans and the environment, including both how technology has affected humans and society and how humans have affected the development of technology.
Project description
The doctoral project deals with a hot social issue - total defense - with a focus on the Arctic part of Scandinavia, especially northern Sweden. The background is the increasing importance of the Arctic for security, preparedness and total defense due to global geopolitical tensions, the consequences of climate change, natural resource needs and the geo-strategic importance of the region. These developments place demands on total defense in the northern parts of Sweden and our neighboring countries. Similar conditions have existed during several periods in the near past. The PhD project will map how and why different societal actors have defined and managed security challenges in the north linked to areas such as natural resources, energy, infrastructure and communities, including indigenous peoples and minorities, during crisis periods in the past, focusing on the Cold War and the two world wars. By analyzing similarities, differences, path dependencies and experiences from the past, the project will contribute with knowledge that is relevant and useful today.
Work tasks
A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. You will be trained in scientific work in the form of publication of monographs or scientific articles in journals and participation in national and international conferences. You will take both compulsory and optional doctoral courses and participate in the activities organized within the framework of the CTF ÖN and SUN research schools. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try out the role of teacher.
