The Division of Product and Production Development at Luleå University of Technology is looking for a PhD student who wants to do research in laser processing.
We are looking for a committed person interested in conducting advanced experimental and theoretical research to study laser additive manufacturing in the context of an international project with important industrial applications.
Subject description
Production development includes both individual processes and techniques for manufacturing, as well as the design of entire systems for industrial production. An important area is laser processing.
Project description
During the first period of your PhD program, you will participate in an international EU project on laser additive manufacturing for metallic products. The research involves both numerical calculations and experimental trials with evaluations.
You will be part of a cooperative research group that offers a friendly, inspiring atmosphere, high scientific level and opportunities for personal development.
Duties and responsibilities
Your main tasks will be to conduct experimental and theoretical research in the field of laser materials processing, to be published in peer-reviewed international journals and at national and international conferences, ultimately resulting in a compilation thesis, your PhD thesis. The doctoral thesis must also be defended at the public defense. To become a Doctor of Technology, you must also have taken and passed 60 course credits.
Qualifications
To be qualified for the position, a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc or equivalent) in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a similar technical subject is required. A strong interest, curiosity and commitment to research together with personal qualities such as presentation skills, communication skills and analytical thinking are prerequisites for success in the PhD program. A high level of English is expected in speech and writing. A continued academic career at Luleå University of Technology may be an opportunity for further development.

Employment as a doctoral student is limited to 4 years, teaching and other departmental duties can be added up to 20% of full-time, corresponding to a 5-year employment. Place of employment: Luleå. Planned start date: September 1, 2025.
