The Machine Learning group at Luleå University of Technology is looking for a PhD student focusing on next generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The research involves hardware inspired by the structure and function of the brain and aims to develop AI solutions with superior energy efficiency and low latency. We offer well-equipped laboratory environments for research as well as a strong interdisciplinary academic network in Sweden and internationally.

Machine learning focuses on methods by which computer systems use data to improve their own performance, understanding and to make concrete predictions and is closely related to applications.
Project description
As a PhD student, you will be part of the MARTINA project, exploring the design and applications of neuromorphic technologies, i.e. brain-like AI solutions for problems that are difficult to solve with conventional technology. The project drives innovation and development through applied AI and advanced digitalization, to strengthen the competitiveness of the region's SMEs.
Work tasks
As a PhD student, you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies and communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. In addition, you will have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the teaching role and have the opportunity to teach relevant courses.
Qualifications
We are looking for an ambitious PhD student who wants to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of brain-inspired machine learning and next-generation hardware concepts. Applicants should have experience in machine learning, computer science, physics, electrical engineering, neuromorphic engineering or similar field. You should have good communication skills in both spoken and written English and be able to work independently as well as in a team.

Information about the program
Employment as a doctoral student is limited to 4 years, teaching and other departmental duties can be added up to 20% of full time. Place of employment: Luleå. Intended start date: by agreement.
