We are looking for a PhD student in Political Science with an interest in sustainable natural resource management. You will be part of the newly launched project JustInTime, which integrates political science, law and ore geology to jointly investigate if, and how, critical raw materials can be extracted and recycled in a sustainable and fair way. You will be part of the graduate school SUN, Natural Resources for Sustainable Societal Transformation.
Project description
You will work in the project Sustainable supply of Critical Raw Materials: Governance for Justice in Time of Rapid Socio Ecological Change (JustInTime). The project aims to develop new knowledge on how society can balance efficiency and access to critical raw materials with social acceptance and legitimacy in a time of rapid socio-ecological and geopolitical change. The aim is to investigate whether, and how, a governance approach that takes justice into account can enable sustainable and legitimate access to critical raw materials and how different justice dimensions relate to legitimacy and sustainability in the implementation of the Critical Raw Materials Act in Sweden.
Work tasks
You will participate in the joint activities of the SUN graduate school and the JustInTime project. Within your own topic, you will be given an individual study plan to follow. As a PhD student, you are expected to actively participate in the department's research environment, which means that you will practice scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. You will also take compulsory and elective postgraduate courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try out the role of teacher.
The location is Luleå, but the doctoral studies also mean that you will take courses elsewhere, and undertake study and conference trips to promote valuable contacts, both in Sweden and internationally. You will be given opportunities to work with and influence the department and its activities. You will develop your skills in identifying, delimiting and formulating political science and interdisciplinary problems, and develop your ability to work with theoretical and analytical issues.
Qualifications
To be admitted to the PhD program in Political Science at Luleå University of Technology, you must have a Master's degree in Political Science or a related subject, as well as very good knowledge of oral and written communication in Swedish and English.
Selection and ranking among the applicants will be made taking into account the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of the merits presented regarding the depth and breadth of their education and on their critical and analytical ability regarding scientific production, such as degree projects from undergraduate and advanced level and any other written scientific production. Experience of scientific writing and an understanding of and interest in issues relating to natural resource management in relation to ecologically, socially and economically sustainable development is an advantage.
In addition to the above, the following are merits for the position: strong grounding in political science theory and methods, interest and ability to work across disciplines, knowledge of natural resource policy and natural resource management, previous experience of working with issues relating to licensing, community planning, sustainability, mineral and land use and the transition of industry and society, and good ability to cooperate and take initiatives.
