You’ll have the freedom to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large.

The Department of Systems and Space Engineering is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in planetary science. At Luleå University of Technology, planetary science is part of the field of atmospheric science. The postdoctoral position offers significant opportunities for interaction with other researchers from multidisciplinary fields, participation in academic conferences, scientific publishing, and other forms of personal and professional development. The project will be conducted at Luleå University of Technology’s space campus in Kiruna.

Subject Description

Atmospheric science encompasses research on the atmospheres of Earth and other planets through modeling, as well as the development and use of instruments for remote sensing and in situ measurements. Particular focus is placed on the dynamic, chemical, and physical processes of the atmosphere, as well as improved weather and climate forecasts.

Project Description

You will work within a research group exploring physical processes on asteroids, comets, and moons in the solar system. The main focus of your research will be how regolith has evolved in space over millions of years, and how this evolution is linked to rock structure and water content.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a postdoctoral fellow consist primarily of research. You will conduct mostly experimental research in our laboratory. Results will be published in international, peer-reviewed journals and presented at major conferences. The position includes supervising doctoral and master’s students, teaching, and assisting in securing funding for future research projects from external research funders.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, you must hold a Ph.D. or an equivalent foreign degree in geology, planetary science, astronomy, atmospheric science, or a related field. It is considered an asset if your degree was awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline for this position. If there are special circumstances, the doctoral degree may have been earned earlier, for example, due to various types of legally mandated leave.

You will be required to represent the group in various contexts, both in Sweden and abroad, and therefore must have excellent English skills. Experience in experimental planetology is required. Experience with experimental simulations of asteroid material is highly valued as a merit.
