We have a wide range of programs to match the skills that are in demand. We hope you will help us build the sustainable businesses and societies of the future. The Applied Geophysics Research Group is part of the Division of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The department consists of about 400 employees and research is conducted in the fields of earth sciences, geotechnics, mining, metallurgy and civil engineering. The department has well-developed collaborations with research institutes, industrial partners and government agencies. The environment at the department is open, dynamic and brings together researchers from about fifty different nationalities and students from all over the world. This three-year postdoctoral position is within the Applied Geophysics research group. It is one of the longest running research groups in the world, continuously active in mineral exploration and geoelectromagnetic studies. Subject description Applied geophysics involves the study of how the laws and methods of physics can be used to understand the properties of rocks and loose deposits. This includes the development and application of methods for exploration and investigation of natural resources such as mineral deposits and water, and for environmental and infrastructure-related issues. Project description This two-year position is part of a project to develop a new method for high-frequency electromagnetic (georadar or controlled electromagnetic CSEM) data modeling based on full-wave 3D inversion to expand our expertise in the characterization and monitoring of terrestrial infrastructure, voids/settlements, mine waste, groundwater contamination and stormwater infiltration processes. Duties of the position The main tasks are: Development of software for high frequency 3D electromagnetic modeling and inversion; Collection of 3D georadar or CSEM measurement data, data processing and 3D inversion; Writing of papers and conference presentations; Contribution to the teaching of geophysics (up to 4 hours per week). Qualifications To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral fellow, you must have a doctoral degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctoral degree in geophysics. A doctoral degree obtained no more than three years before the deadline for applications is an advantage. Candidates who have obtained a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special reasons, such as various types of statutory leave. Competency requirements for the position: Strong programming skills (FORTRAN95, C++ or python) and experience in developing high frequency 2D or 3D georadar or transient electromagnetic modeling and inversion codes is essential. Good publication history is desirable. Additional information Full-time, fixed-term position for two years (up to a maximum of 3 years) based in Luleå. Start date: May 2026.
