Our research and education contribute decisively to shaping future policy and planning of future cities. More information about our activities; www.ltu.se/architecture Subject description Architecture encompasses building design, urban design and transportation planning where aesthetic design combines functional, technical, practical and economic dimensions in relation to people, sustainability, landscape, and the built environment. Project description The main objective of the project Strengthening Sámi spatial planning through participatory methods, is to explore participatory design methods that integrate Sámi cultural values and knowledge into spatial planning. The project addresses the rapid transformations in northern Sweden and Sápmi, driven by global resource needs and industrialization. In Giron/Kiruna, the expansion of mining and subsequent urban development is having a profound impact on reindeer herding and risks relocating Sámi institutions to other parts of Sápmi. At the same time, Sámi architectural expressions risk being erased from the cityscape. The lack of Sámi cultural understanding among planners exacerbates the problem. The project is a collaboration between researchers in architecture at LTU and the nomadic Sami art institution Verdde. The postdoc's work in the project will use a hybrid approach combining artistic research methods and participatory design in the co-creation of Verdde's project Oadjut, which aims to construct the first public Sámi architecture built from a Sámi perspective in Giron. The postdoc will conduct explorations of artistic methods in fieldwork, plan and implement participatory activities in collaboration with Verdde and disseminate academic and artistic results. Duties and responsibilities As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to carry out both experimental and theoretical work. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research, but you will also be expected to be involved in supervising students and collaborating with PhD students. In addition, you may participate in other teaching activities at the department. A postdoctoral position involves scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and presenting at international conferences. Postdoctoral researchers are expected to take significant responsibility for the planning and management of their own project. The postdoc is placed within the research subject architecture and linked to LTU's interdisciplinary artistic research center LTU ARC. Qualifications To be eligible for employment, a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in architecture or other disciplines relevant to conducting research, such as art or anthropology, is required. It is an advantage if the degree was obtained no more than three years before the closing date for applications for this position. If there are special reasons, those who have obtained a doctoral degree earlier may be considered, for example in the case of various types of statutory leave. In the assessment, particular attention will be paid to: - Knowledge and experience relevant to participatory or community projects in theory and/or practice - Knowledge and experience relevant to Sámi or other indigenous contexts - Experience in artistic research methods in architecture or other artistic disciplines - Communication and collaboration skills - Quality and relevance of publications - Quality of the doctoral thesis - Personal qualities relevant to participatory/community-based research We are looking for researchers who can work independently as well as in groups. You must have very good communication skills and be fluent in spoken and written English. Additional knowledge of Sámi and/or Scandinavian languages is an advantage but not a requirement. We believe that the successful candidate will have a strong interest in indigenous architecture. Previous experience in participatory design processes in indigenous contexts is an advantage.
