The research subject Applied Geochemistry belongs to the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, where research and education in the mining, construction and environmental fields contribute to the development of a long-term sustainable society. We are now looking for a professor and chair in applied geochemistry to lead and develop the subject in the societal transition to greener technology.The subject has since the early 1990s successfully combined applied research with basic research.The basic research aims to understand the concentration levels and mobility of elements under natural conditions. Applied research covers pollution effects from different types of human activities and measures to reduce emissions of pollutants and limit their harmful effects. The environmental issues of the mining industry have been and will be one of the main research areas of the subject, but the subject has great potential to be broadened towards applications in infrastructure and civil engineering. Analytical chemistry, isotope geochemistry and environmental forensics are important parts of the subject's research areas.Topic descriptionApplied geochemistry includes studies of the occurrence and mobility of elements in rock, soil and water, with a focus on methods to prevent or reduce environmental effects from metal extraction and community construction.DutiesThe position of Professor and Head of Subject is a leadership role with overall responsibility for leading and developing the subject in terms of research, doctoral education and education at undergraduate and advanced levels. For a professor, this also includes following the subject's international development, supervising doctoral students and assisting in teaching. In addition, the assignment includes further developing collaboration within the department and with other subjects at the university, as well as strengthening the link to relevant national and international research environments and to industry.Subject representatives have a special responsibility for attracting external funds and securing funding for both their own research and for promoting the academic environment at the subject in general. An important task for the Head of Subject is to build a strong research subject where doctoral students, staff and students grow and develop.EligibilityThe person who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical expertise is eligible for appointment as a professor. Equal attention shall be paid to the assessment of pedagogical and scientific competence.To meet the requirements for appointment as professor, the applicant shall

  • be outstanding in his/her subject area and demonstrate scientific activity of a high international standard, showing a clear progression in quality
  • have a total scientific production that in quantity shall correspond to at least three doctoral theses including the doctoral dissertation
  • show academic leadership, through, among other things- experience of research-related positions of trust as an expert, opponent and/or member of an examining committee- experience of managing research projects- experience of applying for and being awarded external funding for research projects in competition as the main applicant- experience of internal assignments within the university- experience of pedagogical leadership
  • have experience of supervision at doctoral level and, unless there are special reasons, have been the main supervisor of at least one doctoral student all the time from admission to the doctoral degree
  • demonstrate pedagogical skills through reflective experience, teaching skills and teaching development
  • demonstrate the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society, by, among other things- making new knowledge available to the surrounding society- incorporating societal needs in research and/or education contexts.

In addition to the eligibility requirements for professors, when recruiting professors and chairs, special emphasis shall be placed on leadership skills, including

  • experience in staff responsibility and staff development
  • self-awareness and the ability to reflect on one's own leadership experience
  • experience in budget responsibility or other financial responsibility.

- good contacts with international networks focusing on mining-related environmental research or other applied geochemical research

- ability to obtain external research and development funds

- good knowledge of English in speech and writing

- contacts with industry and our Swedish students require good knowledge of Swedish, and applicants who do not master the Swedish language are expected to acquire this knowledge within 1-2 years of employment

- ability to collaborate internally within the university and with the surrounding community
