The Machine Learning Research Laboratory, led by Professor Marcus Liwicki, is now advertising a position in machine learning with a focus on applied artificial intelligence (AI). The group is growing through new projects, teaching and collaborations and is now offering a position for a junior research engineer. The project description In recent years, large-scale language models (LLMs) and basic models have become central tools to enable advanced reasoning, text generation, and multimodal understanding. Applied AI takes these technologies out of the lab and transforms them into educational, industrial and societal solutions. The position is located at the intersection of AI and education, where new machine learning approaches, in particular LLM-based systems, are explored and implemented to support teaching, learning and educational innovation. Duties and responsibilities - Work on research and development projects in applied AI for education, with a particular focus on designing, integrating and evaluating LLM-based educational tools. - Implement prototypes and software solutions that enable intelligent tutoring, personalized feedback, automated assessment and other AI-powered educational applications. - Develop APIs, pipelines and integration layers between LLMs and learning platforms (e.g. LMS, interactive learning tools, digital course environments). - Contribute to teaching by tutoring labs, assignments and projects in AI and ML courses. - Support course development by improving course materials, assignments and video content. - Contribute to the dissemination of project results through social media, demonstration materials and communication with stakeholders. Qualifications Eligible to be employed as a research engineer is the person who has completed relevant education in artificial intelligence or computer science. Proven knowledge of programming (e.g. Python), machine learning frameworks and practical work with LLMs or AI pipeline technologies is an advantage. Experience in teaching or assisting in higher education is also an advantage. Assessment criteria The following assessment criteria apply to the position: - Scientific and technical competence in machine learning, natural language processing, LLM integration and AI-based educational technologies. - Experience in research or development projects, especially in AI applications or educational innovation. - Practical experience in software development, prototyping and working with students. - Good oral and written communication skills. - Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary environments and contribute to educational development.
