The Division of http://www.ltu.se/vatten (Water and Wastewater Engineering) at the Department of Civil Engineering and Natural Resources, Luleå University of Technology, is seeking a temporary Senior Research Engineer to work with laboratory operations.

Subject Description

Water and Wastewater Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (stormwater, drinking water, and wastewater) with regard to collection, transportation, and treatment, as well as organization and planning. The research aims to promote a healthy economy and environment, the wise use of resources, and the safety and health of citizens.

Project Description

Our research group holds a strong position in research and education regarding urban water systems, primarily in the areas of stormwater, pipeline networks, small-scale wastewater treatment, and sewage systems. The research is conducted in the field, in the lab, and through modeling and simulation. Being part of the research group means working in an international and creative environment. The group consists of approximately 55 staff members, including several senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors, postdocs, and doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international network in both research and within municipalities and industry.

Job Responsibilities

In this position, you will support researchers and doctoral students conducting field and laboratory-based studies and help ensure the smooth operation of the research group’s laboratory activities. The job responsibilities are therefore multifaceted. They primarily include:

• Supporting the planning and implementation of doctoral students’ research (for example, flow measurement and sampling of stormwater and wastewater in the field, experimental setups in the lab, selecting appropriate analytical methods, maintaining contact with contracted laboratories and suppliers, and reviewing risk assessments for conducting field and laboratory work)
• Performing simple laboratory analyses (e.g., pH, conductivity, nitrogen and phosphorus analyses, filtration, and particle size distribution using laser diffraction), as well as training doctoral students in how to perform these analyses.
• Participate in field and laboratory instruction in undergraduate and graduate courses by, for example, setting up experimental apparatus, serving as an instructor, etc.
• Be responsible for the procurement of chemicals and equipment
• Together with the research engineer in charge of fieldwork, be responsible for and establish work procedures to ensure that the research group maintains good organization of field and lab equipment
• Participate in procurement processes related to laboratory operations, as well as
• Serve as the VA-teknik representative in the laboratory group for the Environmental Laboratory at LTU, which is shared with other research groups.

Qualifications

For the position of Senior Research Engineer, a college or university degree in environmental engineering, natural resource engineering, process engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, or another field deemed equivalent is required. Additionally required:

• Experience with laboratory work, preferably involving water and soil/sludge/sediment samples, and knowledge of various analytical methods related to metals/elements and organic contaminants
• Good command of Swedish
• At least a basic knowledge of English

Experience in coordinating or managing professional roles, as well as a Class B driver’s license, is also considered an asset.

You have a good sense of organization, can plan and prioritize your work, but are flexible enough to adapt when plans need to change. You enjoy familiarizing yourself with new areas of knowledge and are able to teach and instruct others.
