Luleå University of Technology is experiencing rapid growth and producing world-leading expertise in several research areas. We are shaping the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results. From our location in the Arctic region, we strive to create global societal benefits. The Machine Learning Research Group at Luleå University of Technology has a vacancy in the field of sustainable machine learning. We offer state-of-the-art resources for conducting research and a good academic network in Sweden and abroad.
Our machine learning research group is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). WASP is Sweden's largest ever single research program, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, training and recruitment of researchers. The program focuses on research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems that act in collaboration with humans, adapt to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and form intelligent systems of systems. The vision for WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry.
Subject description
Machine learning focuses on methods by which computer systems use data to improve their own performance, understanding and to make concrete predictions and is closely related to applications.
Project description
The Sustainable Machine Learning research projects focus on developing Edge AI solutions that harmonize environmental responsibility with technological progress. Central to these initiatives is the transformative potential of Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) (https://youtu.be/MgqcLCqqjuQ), which enables AI deployment on resource-constrained devices such as microcontrollers, enabling energy-efficient systems across the cloud-to-edge continuum. By leveraging heterogeneous hardware and improving software engineering processes and interoperability, these projects aim to create AI systems that are robust, explainable and widely available. In addition, they prioritize social and environmental responsibility, ensuring that sustainable AI development not only advances technological opportunities but is also consistent with long-term societal and environmental welfare.
Duties and responsibilities
The position involves conducting collaborative research with both academic institutions and industry partners across Europe, with an emphasis on strong industry engagement. Responsibilities include supervision of PhD students and participation in research projects, from planning to implementation and analysis. In addition to research, teaching and educational program development are also included, with a focus on improving pedagogical methods. Close collaboration with other researchers and interdisciplinary work is also a central part of the role.
Qualifications
To qualify for a postdoctoral position, you must have a PhD or an equivalent foreign degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, embedded systems, mathematics, robotics, or a closely relevant field. It is an advantage if your degree was obtained no more than three years before the closing date for applications for this position. If there are special reasons, those who have obtained a doctorate earlier may be considered, for example in case of various types of statutory leave.
Research expertise in Internet of Things, Embedded Machine Learning, Edge AI or Tiny Machine Learning is advantageous. We seek enthusiastic candidates who can demonstrate expertise in conducting cutting-edge research, as demonstrated by a track record of peer-reviewed publications. Experience in international research collaboration is highly desirable. Candidates should have strong English language skills, both spoken and written, and have the ability to work independently as well as collaborate in teams.
