Personal assistance is a service profession, and your job is to provide service and practical assistance as instructed, so that the person you assist can live their life the way they want and need to. It is the client, as your immediate supervisor, who defines the scope of your position and the tasks you are to perform at any given time.
We are looking for two user-directed personal assistants for our wonderful son. Two permanent positions at 21.12%. It is desirable that the permanent employees be able to cover for each other in case of absence. Our son will turn 12 in the spring of 2026 and is in 5th grade at Moelv School. He is cheerful and kind, and loves to joke around, play pranks, and have playful fights. He lives at home with his little brother, big sister, mom, dad, and cat. He has a rare chromosomal abnormality that causes significant delays in speech, motor skills, and cognitive functioning. Nevertheless, he communicates very well in his own way and understands most of what is said. He does not need assistive devices in his daily life and moves around freely. But he needs help with practical tasks and personal care. Our boy loves speed and anything that hums on land or water, animals and farm life, bathing/swimming, sledding, skiing (cross-country and sit-ski), fishing, bike rides, playgrounds, zoos, carousels, camping trips, toy cars/trains, etc., but he also really enjoys relaxing. One afternoon a week, he goes horseback riding. He has many interests, and it would be great if the person assisting him in his daily life also shares some of these.
Since he has motor limitations, he needs a personal assistant (BPA) who is in good physical shape and can handle both the highs and lows. He needs a reliable and dependable person who is predictable and whom he can trust. You should be self-motivated, patient, and able to take initiative. You should be good at finding solutions and not afraid to think outside the box when it comes to activities and accommodations. The position primarily involves working in the afternoons, evenings, and on weekends.
We prefer a fixed afternoon shift each week during the school year, weekends approximately every 8 weeks, and a few days or weeks during the day on school breaks or days when students are not in school. There will be a need for occasional shifts lasting up to 12 hours on weekends. Working hours and duration will be set out in a work schedule and may be somewhat flexible based on agreement and the preferences of the employees. It is desirable that candidates be willing to stay in the position over the long term to provide predictability for the family.
