Personal assistance is a service profession, and your job is to provide service and practical assistance as instructed, so that the person you assist can live their life the way they want and need to. Your supervisor is your immediate superior and is responsible for defining the scope of your position and the tasks you are to perform at any given time.

Personal Assistants for the BPA program wanted, 43.66% and 46.47% on-call

Creative, music-loving, and socially engaged woman in her 40s is looking for Personal Assistants. Due to a physical disability, I need assistance with both small and large tasks in my daily life to make things work, to be able to do the things I want to do, and to be able to contribute and be a part of society with all that it entails.

User-directed Personal Assistance is an important tool for empowerment and equality for people with disabilities, which can contribute to independence, an active life, and the practical realization of our rights. When you work as my Personal Assistant, I will be your supervisor and immediate manager. Good cooperation and communication are very important for both parties.

Duties:

As my BPA, you will be asked to assist in a wide range of situations and areas of life. You are not expected to know or be able to do everything in advance. Training will be provided.

No education or prior experience as a Personal Assistant or similar is required.

If you come from a background other than healthcare, you are encouraged to apply.

Areas where you can expect to assist:

  • Mobility assistance
  • Personal hygiene and care: including showering, dressing and undressing, morning and evening care, skin care, hair care, etc.
  • Household management: cooking, cleaning, laundry, doing dishes, tidying up, practical tasks indoors and outdoors, simple maintenance, grocery shopping, cleaning assistive devices, etc.
  • Errands and appointments
  • Leisure and social life: for example, visits to cafés, the movies, concerts, and other cultural events; visits to family and friends, etc.
  • Organizational activities, activism, and community involvement
  • Physical activity and stretching
  • Creative hobbies and DIY: assisting with, for example, paper crafts, collage, zine-making, painting, decorating, and simple upgrades to clothing and hair, various other creative activities
  • Occasional trips/vacations, overnight trips (by arrangement)

A personal assistant can often help with most things that people without disabilities are able to do on their own. The tasks vary between things I need full assistance with and things where I need a helping hand and some adjustments. I use a wheelchair and also have certain limitations in my upper body.

Work hours will vary between days, evenings, and weekends.

I’m looking for:

  • someone who believes they can provide good service and understands that they must do so in the way I want and need
  • someone who can follow instructions while also taking the initiative on tasks you know are your responsibilities
  • someone who is responsible and dependable
  • someone who is reliable and punctual
  • someone who can adapt to different situations
  • that you can thrive in both quieter and more hectic workdays
  • that you’re a good team player
  • that you’re calm and steady
  • that you’re tolerant and flexible
  • that you’re self-assured
  • that you can be considerate and show respect for others
