Are you the one?

The Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala is looking for a visiting scientist in space physics for the research program Space Plasma Physics. The position is at IRF's Uppsala office, which has premises in the Ångström Laboratory. The visiting scientist will work in a top-class international research environment with excellent opportunities for collaboration and scientific exchange.

The research project focuses on investigating the coupling between the dynamics of the magnetotail and geomagnetically induced currents. Data will be used from satellites such as MMS, Swarm, as well as from ground-based IMAGE to identify the links between dynamic processes in the tail and ground disturbances. In particular, the link to geoelectric fields will be investigated, as these can lead to disturbances on infrastructure such as power grids. The research results will be used, among other things, to assess how much risk it poses to the Swedish power grid.

Our research group works with observations, analysis of data and development of physical models of processes in space plasma (IRF Space Plasma Physics). The group has extensive experience in developing and using scientific instruments to measure plasma density, density fluctuations, electric fields and plasma temperature on spacecraft. These spacecraft include BepiColombo, MMS, Solar Orbiter, Swarm, Cassini, Cluster, Rosetta, JUICE, and Comet Interceptor. The IRF also conducts ground-based observations with magnetometers, cameras, radio and radar instruments (e.g. EISCAT).

Qualifications

The applicant should have a PhD in space physics or a related field.

The applicant should have experience in analyzing and interpreting data from space plasma instruments and good knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. MATLAB, Python, etc.).Experience working with data from Swarm and MMS will be a great advantage, as well as knowledge of geomagnetically induced currents.

What we can offer you

The visiting scientist will be employed for one year at the Institute of Space Physics. The start date is flexible but should be in the fall of 2025 at the latest.

Gender equality, equal opportunities and diversity are fundamental principles in our workplace which means that we take gender equality aspects into account in daily work and in all decision-making forums.

The application should include a CV and a cover letter (max. 1 page) describing the applicant's research interests and relevant experience, copies of undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas, description and evidence of previous postdoctoral positions and/or similar research work (if relevant), and reprints or open access links of up to 4 publications. The application should also include contact details of two professional references.
