The Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Solar System Physics and Space Technology (SSPT) research program in Kiruna to study a new class of interactions between Mars and the solar wind: degenerate induced magnetospheres.

Duties

The PhD project uniquely combines numerical simulations and data analysis from space instruments. The data available for analysis includes particle and magnetic field data from missions to Mars, ESA's Mars Express and NASA's MAVEN, and ESA's mission to Venus, Venus Express. Computer simulations are performed at the Kebnekaise cluster at the High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N) at Umeå University.

Qualifications

The PhD student will be admitted to the Department of Physics at Umeå University and must therefore meet the university's requirements. Information about the PhD program can be found at: https://www.umu.se/institutionen-for-fysik/

The applicant is expected to have completed a master's degree or equivalent at the time of starting the employment. Meritorious but not required are:

  • Good knowledge of the programming language Python
  • Strong interest in planetary science and Mars
  • Completed courses in plasma theory
