Description

The Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is looking for a researcher with a strong interest in scientific studies of space weather effects and in the development of IRF's space weather products in collaboration with both Swedish authorities and international partners.

Duties

Space weather affects technology and humans through physical processes originating from the Sun and its interaction with the Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere. The technological effects are well known and include impacts on satellites, communications, navigation, and electric power distribution.

The researcher position belongs to the IRF's Solar, Space and Atmospheric Research (STAR) program, which includes scientists, engineers and developers from the various IRF offices. You will be part of a dynamic group studying space weather and ionospheric physics, meteors and space objects, and atmospheric dynamics and high-altitude Arctic clouds. IRF is a member of the International Space Environment Service with responsibility for the Regional Warning Center Sweden. You are expected to, both independently and in close collaboration with researchers at IRF's various offices as well as with Swedish authorities and other actors, formulate relevant questions and conduct scientific studies related to, for example, geomagnetic storms and space weather effects on radio communications. You are also expected to actively lead and contribute to technical investigations and development of operational space weather products. The tasks also include applying for external research funding. The work includes international collaborations within established networks as well as the development of new research collaborations.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have a PhD in space physics (or in a related subject area that the employer deems equivalent) and relevant knowledge and experience of research and model development in space weather. Experience in operational space weather activities or space weather services is particularly advantageous. Since the work takes place in close collaboration with both national authorities and international actors, it is a requirement that you can communicate in speech and writing in both English and Swedish. You have very good interpersonal skills and great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The position may be subject to a security check.

What we can offer you

We can offer you a workplace with flexible working hours and up to seven weeks of vacation per year.

What we are most proud to be able to offer you is varied and interesting work tasks, nice colleagues and a creative and free workplace where everyone gets their own responsibility.

Equality, equal opportunities and diversity are fundamental principles in our workplace, which means that we take into account equality aspects in the daily work and in all decision-making forums.

Terms and conditions

The position is a fixed-term position located at IRF's office in Lund. IRF applies individual salary setting. Start date in September 2026 or as agreed.

The application should include a CV and a short letter (max one page) describing research interest and relevant experience. Contact information for two references should also be attached.
