The Disability Services Department in the Municipality of Umeå aims to be a resource that, through proximity and collaboration, empowers and strengthens people’s ability to live independently.

People under the age of 65 who have a disability and extensive needs for support and assistance can apply for personal assistance. A personal assistant helps a person with basic needs, such as eating, getting dressed, personal hygiene, and communication. The assistance is individually tailored and is intended to provide people with disabilities with greater opportunities to live an independent life.

The Role

We are looking for someone who, with confidence, clarity, and a great deal of creativity, wants to create a meaningful daily life for an 18-year-old girl with a rare chromosomal abnormality, an intellectual disability, and autism. The assignment is based at the girl’s home in Sävar, where she lives with her parents and siblings. Depending on what you plan for the day, activities may take place at home or on various outings. You will plan the day together with the client.

Job Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include assisting and guiding the client through the day. By using structured and clear teaching methods, you will help the client at home as well as plan and accompany her on activities and outings. You’ll create order and structure for the client, and together with parents and the school, you’ll maintain routines while also finding new approaches when needed to ensure daily life runs as smoothly as possible.

The client has a big heart and plenty of charm, and enjoys having things happen around her. She enjoys music, games, playful antics, and various outings. There will be plenty of room for quiet and cozy moments together. You’ll become an important person in the client’s life and in the family’s daily routine. The job involves managing the client’s emotions, which you’ll do with empathy, respect, and a calm, composed approach. You’ll act as a stress regulator, staying calm and focused in situations where the client doesn’t understand their own emotions.

Scheduled work hours: afternoons after school, evenings, and weekends/holidays.

About You

We’re looking for someone who also has a big heart and a strong commitment to children and young people. You want to help shape another person’s life and daily routine and view this role as a long-term commitment, since security and relationships are very important to the client.

The role requires you to be proactive and resourceful when it comes to activities. You have a creative streak and enjoy fun antics. The client needs your full attention, and you need to stay one step ahead. You are patient and can switch between structure and flexibility to ease transitions to the next activity or help the client manage their emotions. You are a source of security for the client and possess good judgment and personal maturity. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

It is desirable if you have a degree in education, social work, or are a certified special education teacher. Experience with intellectual disabilities, autism, threats and violence, and low-affect communication is also a plus. A Class B driver’s license is required for this position.
