Become our new colleague in the Street Maintenance Department!

Streets and Parks is part of the Engineering and Property Management Department within the City of Umeå. We plan, build, develop, and manage the municipality’s public outdoor spaces—such as streets, squares, parks, and green spaces. We work to ensure that Umeå is a well-maintained, safe, and accessible city—with high-quality living environments for its residents. Our goal is to contribute to a sustainable society, and we view diversity as a strength.

Would you like to work with the operation and maintenance of the street network in a growing city—in a role where you take personal responsibility while collaborating closely with others?

As a pavement engineer with us, you’ll work on planning, ordering, and following up on measures that affect accessibility and safety in Umeå—every day. With us, you’ll play a key role in keeping Umeå’s streets, bike paths, and other surfaces safe, sustainable, and accessible—all year round.

About the Role

You’ll work with the operation and maintenance of the municipality’s streets, squares, and bike paths, with a focus on paving. This includes asphalt, paved surfaces, and gravel roads. The role is independent and varied. You’ll handle many tasks on your own—from inventory to follow-up—while collaborating with colleagues and contractors. You’ll also contribute the operations perspective to projects, building permits, and detailed plans.

The work alternates between planning and fieldwork (approximately 70/30 depending on the season). The pace varies throughout the year—summer is more intense, while the winter period involves more follow-up, planning, and development work. During the winter, the role may also include managing and monitoring aspects of snow removal on our streets and bike paths.

The role includes, among other things:

  • Planning, prioritizing, ordering, and following up on paving projects
  • Assessing needs and evaluating interventions
  • Managing excavation permits and site restoration; conducting inspections, checks, final inspections, and warranty inspections
  • Collaborating with contractors, consultants, and internal departments
  • Contributing an operational perspective to renovation projects, building permit issues, detailed plans, and other referrals

On-call duties may be required, which involves handling emergency situations that affect traffic flow and safety.

Why is this role important?

This role is central to the municipality’s ability to maintain the infrastructure that residents use every day. What you and your team do improves accessibility, safety, sustainability, and functionality in the public environment.

Your work impacts how people of all ages can get from A to B—on foot, by bike, by bus, or by car.

Your Workplace

You’ll be part of the paving team within Street Maintenance, a team of five people that’s part of a larger workgroup of about 19 colleagues with various skills in the operations area.

Here, we work both independently and collaboratively. We help each other when needed, cover for one another, and share our knowledge. The group is characterized by an open atmosphere, a focus on solutions, and professional pride. Many stay with us for a long time, which creates both continuity and security.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Education or documented experience in operations and maintenance work on streets, squares, and bike paths
  • A Class B driver’s license
  • Fluency in spoken and written Swedish, as well as basic knowledge of English

Experience leading and overseeing operations and maintenance work, particularly in paving, is a plus.

As a person, you are:

  • Confident working both independently and with others
  • Organized and able to prioritize tasks at varying paces
  • Service-oriented and communicative when interacting with others, both verbally and in writing
  • Independent and able to make decisions in day-to-day work

Why should you choose us?

We offer varied and meaningful work where you’ll have the opportunity to influence the development of Umeå’s public spaces.

With us, you’ll get:

  • Excellent opportunities for professional development
  • Flexible work hours, a wellness allowance, and other benefits
  • The opportunity for additional vacation days based on age
  • Time bank (extra time off)

Would you like to help improve accessibility, safety, and the functionality of public spaces in Umeå? Then we look forward to receiving your application!
