Firefighter on standby for the Umeå Region Fire Department Type of Employment Part-time
Job position Firefighter
Work model On location
Application due date 3 May 2026
Are you the one? Become a firefighter on standby!
As a firefighter, you will receive solid training, exciting tasks and an unrivaled sense of community in your work team.
But above all, you fulfill a vital social function.
We have nine stations manned by firefighters on standby: Vindeln, Åmsele, Robertsfors, Ånäset, Botsmark, Sävar, Tavelsjö, Holmsund and Hörnefors. The Umeå Region Fire Department includes Umeå, Vindeln and Robertsfors municipalities. As a firefighter on standby, you usually have a regular job with another employer. When the alarm goes off, you respond from the station you belong to.
The assignments vary and can involve anything from fires and traffic accidents to providing first aid.
Are you our next firefighter?
We're looking for people with a high level of commitment who can spend part of their time on call. Our rescue teams often face complex situations and to ensure we have the widest possible range of skills, we are looking for people with different experiences and backgrounds.
Cooperation skills, problem-solving abilities and a natural aptitude for a service-oriented and respectful approach - these are some of the qualities we value highly and need in a team.
Preparedness at home and at work
The schedule varies, but the basic principle is that you are on call every four weeks. During that week, you respond when the alarm goes off, whether you are at home or at work. In the event of an alarm, you must be at the fire station in your locality within five minutes.
Most of them are on standby around the clock, but other solutions are also possible. You also have an exercise one evening per emergency week.
How often do you go on call?
A firefighter on standby goes on call about 15 times a year and is away from work for an average of 30 minutes each time. The number of calls varies from place to place.
We train you
You get the training and practice you need from us. First a basic training at the station in Umeå and within a two-year period you will attend a training course run by the Swedish Civil Defense Authority (MCF) on Sandö or in Luleå. In total, it is about seven weeks.
You will regularly undertake internal training and exercises. Most exercises are held at your local station during the evening or on weekends.
We provide much of the training for the C license (heavy vehicle) if you do not already have it.
You will be paid by us during all training and practice sessions.
It is possible to start working before the end of the training.
Employment and remuneration
You will be employed under the current RiB contract. You will receive a fixed salary per week on call. In addition, you will receive hourly pay for call-outs and exercises. We also pay you a salary for the duration of your training.
The level of employment varies greatly depending on the station you work at and the number of alarms.
What is required to apply?
There are a number of requirements you need to meet in order to be considered as a firefighter and invited for an interview.
You should be at least 18 years old.
Have a B driving license.
You must live or work near the fire station in your locality.
Usually, the crew should leave the station within 5 minutes of the alarm being raised.
You need permission from your regular employer to leave the workplace for alarms and training.
How to apply
We accept applications and conduct selections and tests throughout the year.
