Landscape Engineer, Streets and Parks Type of Employment Full-time
Job position Landscape engineer
Work model On location
Application due date 7 October 2024
Are you the one? Are you a dedicated landscape engineer, ecologist or forester with an interest in urban green spaces and sustainable urban development? We are now looking for a deputy coordinator for the Parks Department.
The position is a temporary position for one year.
The Parks Department manages a natural area of about 1000 hectares and about 30,000 trees in avenues, squares and parks. All our forest land is FSC-certified. The green structure in Umeå has a key role in meeting the challenges of society, and as a planner you will help us to preserve and develop the city's ecosystem services and green qualities - both from an ecological, social, cultural and economic perspective.
Your tasks
Your main task is to coordinate the development of the parks department's work with nature and trees, and you also work operationally to run and support various projects.
Together with the working group, you follow up the management plans for the parks department's forests and nature reserves, compile current needs and prioritize measures. The forest measures are carried out partly in-house and partly with a contractor, and you have an important role in compiling a plan and supporting the implementation so that the work is in line with the focus on sustainability and ecosystem services. Procurement of inventories may occur.
In the role of landscape engineer for trees, you will monitor the development of the municipality's urban trees, survival rates and planting needs. You plan and prioritize measures to create the conditions for long-term vital tree stock in the city's parks, squares and avenues. Support in project groups for construction and civil engineering projects with regard to trees also occurs.
The position includes representing the parks department in working groups and therefore requires a constructive approach and good collaboration skills. You will participate in the municipality's climate and environment coordination group and coordinate the internal work of the Streets and Parks Department on combating invasive species. Dialogue with the public or companies may occur, for example on permits or procedures for digging on municipal land.
You will be part of the Parks Department team led by the Head of Parks Operations who also holds the title of City Gardener. The team is responsible for the planning, development and operation of the municipality's parks and residential nature. The team is well supported by experienced landscape architects, landscape engineers and climate adaptation strategists, but it would be an advantage if you have the training or experience to take on an expert role in any area.
About you
We are looking for people who are responsible, analytical and have a good ability to plan and organize their work. You bring new ideas and have a long-term perspective. You are a good communicator and work well with others. In this role, you will manage several projects simultaneously, which requires both structure and flexibility.
Requirements for the position:
- At least a bachelor's degree as landscape engineer, ecologist, forester education with park or nature conservation focus that we consider equivalent.
- Experience of supervising forestry work, park arborist or construction work.
- Basic IT skills are required.
- B driving license is a requirement, as field visits are part of the work.
Meritorious:
- In-depth knowledge in a field relevant to the position, such as nature value assessment, accessibility adaptation in natural environments, management of invasive species or management of trees in urban environments.
- Experience of working with the Planning and Building Act, the Species Protection Ordinance and the Environmental Code in the public sector.
- Knowledge of GIS.
Other duties
Temporary position starting 2024-11-04 until 2025-12-31.
If you recognize yourself in the above description, submit your application with a cover letter and CV. Welcome with your application!
