Are you the one?

Umeå is known for its creative atmosphere and a rich, inspiring cultural life of national significance. Among other things, the city is home to an opera house, four highly regarded museums, influential festivals, a world-class sculpture park, art galleries, a European film festival, and music, dance, and theater groups for all ages. In Umeå, culture is a key driving force for a sustainable and democratic society.

The Umeå School of Culture offers a wide range of activities, including courses, school-based projects, and open programs, such as those held during school breaks. We offer activities in a range of artistic disciplines and are committed to ensuring that more children in the municipality have access to cultural activities in various ways. We have approximately 70 employees working in the Culture School’s programs, and we are located on Vasagatan and at Hamnmagasinet in the city center, as well as at Midgårdsskolan; however, we also conduct activities at some 30 schools and other locations throughout Umeå.

About the Position

We are now seeking a full-time music teacher specializing in guitar and band/ensemble activities. The Culture School’s mission is to reach more children and young people, in part by expanding our presence to more locations throughout the city and municipality. Initially, the position involves leading the launch of a new initiative for group music instruction at more elementary schools.

Together with colleagues, you will start and lead groups/ensembles at elementary schools, as well as teach primarily guitar. We are therefore looking for someone with experience teaching guitar as well as group instruction, such as pop and rock bands, ensembles, and/or choir activities.

As a teacher at the Culture School, you will also work within the framework of the municipality’s “Culture Promise” in collaboration with elementary schools, as well as during certain school breaks and, to some extent, in other open and outreach activities.

About You

To succeed in this role, you must have a strong ability to adapt your teaching to the participants’ needs. We are looking for someone who wants to be a social and compassionate role model with an understanding of everyone’s differences, both cultural and social. You are open-minded and curious, and willing to work with your colleagues to develop your methods. You believe it is essential that children and young people be involved and have the opportunity to influence the activities. You are a strong leader with a strong desire to collaborate, both within and outside the organization. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

Requirements

  • Certified music teacher, or other music education
  • Documented experience in educational work
  • Valid police background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a cultural school
  • Experience working on projects, preferably in a leadership role

Employment Information

This is a permanent, full-time position, starting February 1, 2027, or as agreed. The employment begins with a 6-month probationary period.

We look forward to receiving your application!
