Are you the one?

The Center of Excellence for Multilingualism works to ensure that students have access to instruction in their native language as well as academic support in the language they know best. Currently, 38 different languages are represented within the program. We collaborate with both municipal and independent school operators, from preschool through high school.

Students who have at least one guardian whose native language is not Swedish are given the opportunity to study their language as a separate school subject. Through native language instruction, students strengthen their multilingualism, develop their identity, and build pride in their language and background.

We are now looking for a native language teacher in Sinhalese!

Employment Information

This is a special fixed-term position, part-time (55%); the scope may be adjusted. Planned start date: August 17, 2026, through December 31, 2026.

Your Responsibilities

The role of a native language teacher is dynamic and varied, with student needs guiding the planning. You will visit various schools throughout the municipality—both in central and outlying areas—to meet students in their school environment.

The role may include the following responsibilities:

  • Native language instruction
  • Academic tutoring in the native language
  • Distance learning and remote tutoring
  • Language support initiatives in collaboration with the Reception Unit Hej Umeå

Native language instruction takes place in groups or individually within the municipality’s schools, from preschool through 9th grade, primarily in the afternoons outside of the regular school schedule. Students in grades F–3 receive in-person instruction at their home school, while students from grade 4 may receive instruction at another school. Bus passes are provided as needed for travel between schools. Distance learning may be offered for students in outlying areas starting in grade 2. The work is independent and includes planning, implementation, grading, and evaluation in accordance with the Swedish curriculum.

Study guidance involves supporting students in grades 1–9 as well as in the Language Introduction program in high school. Tutoring can take place before, during, or after class time. You will work closely with mentors and subject teachers, who are responsible for planning, while you provide support in the student’s native language to strengthen their learning.

This may include support for Hej Umeå Reception Unit in the intake of newly arrived students, for example through informational meetings and assessments.

About you

We are looking for someone who is creative, self-motivated, and flexible, and who thrives in a dynamic work environment. You are curious and have a strong desire to both contribute to development and develop yourself. As a person, you easily build good relationships with students, guardians, and colleagues. Furthermore, you have strong collaboration skills, are responsive, and can communicate and handle various situations in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. You take responsibility for your tasks and treat others in a courteous and respectful manner. We place great emphasis on your personal suitability.

Requirements
