The Center of Excellence for Multilingualism works to ensure that students have access to instruction in their native language as well as academic support in the language they know best. Currently, 38 different languages are represented within the program. We collaborate with both municipal and independent school operators, from preschool through high school.

Students who have at least one parent or guardian whose native language is not Swedish are given the opportunity to study their language as a separate school subject. Through native language instruction, students can strengthen their multilingualism, develop their identity, and build pride in their language and background.

We are now looking for a Sinhalese native language teacher!

Employment Information

This is a special fixed-term position, part-time (55%); the scope may be subject to change. Planned start date: August 17, 2026, through December 31, 2026.

Your Responsibilities

The role of a native language teacher is dynamic and varied, with the student population guiding the planning. You will visit various schools throughout the municipality—both in central areas and in outlying areas—to meet students in their school environment.

The role may include the following responsibilities:

• Native language instruction
• Academic guidance in the native language
• Remote instruction and remote guidance
• Language support initiatives in collaboration with the Reception Unit Hej Umeå

Native language instruction takes place in groups or individually within the municipality’s schools, from preschool through 9th grade, primarily in the afternoons outside the regular school schedule. Students in grades F–3 receive in-person instruction at their home school, while students from grade 4 onward may receive instruction at another school. Bus passes are provided as needed for travel between schools. Distance learning may be offered to students in outlying areas starting in grade 2. The work is independent and includes planning, implementation, grading, and evaluation in accordance with the Swedish curriculum.

Study support involves assisting students in grades 1–9 as well as those in the Language Introduction program in high school. Support may take place before, during, or after class time. You will work closely with mentors and subject teachers, who are responsible for planning, while you provide support in the student’s native language to strengthen their learning.

This may include support for Hej Umeå—the reception unit responsible for welcoming newly arrived students—for example, through informational meetings and assessments.

Requirements

• Sinhala as a native language, with documented proficiency
• Passing grade in Swedish B/Swedish 2
• Strong digital skills
• Teacher training, Swedish or foreign—or alternative teaching experience
• Valid criminal background check, in accordance with the Act on Suitability Checks

Desirable Qualifications

• Proficiency in additional languages
