The Disability Services Department in the Municipality of Umeå aims to be a resource that, through proximity and collaboration, empowers and strengthens people’s ability to live independently.

Älvans väg is located in Tomtebo, Umeå, and is a group home under the LSS. Here, residents live in their own apartments and share common areas. Currently, five people with various disabilities live here.

We are now looking for a support educator to join our team!

Your Responsibilities

Together with your colleagues, you will support people with disabilities. You’ll work to help each individual participate in a functional daily life and enjoy a fulfilling leisure time.

As a support educator, you’ll use evidence-based educational methods to create a sense of security and structure in the daily lives of people with disabilities. You will guide staff in their direct client-focused work and actively contribute to quality improvement, documentation, and the onboarding of new colleagues. You will also be part of a network of support educators where you’ll have the opportunity to share experiences and engage in continuous professional development. You will work under the direction of your supervisor, and your assignments may vary over time depending on the needs of the program(s).

Nursing care is part of the job and may include, for example, personal hygiene, assistance with meals, cleaning and laundry, planning activities, accompanying residents to doctor’s appointments, administering medication, and documentation.

Important Information

• Outwardly aggressive behavior occurs at the facility. Heavy lifting is also required, and mobility aids are used.
• Work shifts are scheduled during the day, evenings, and weekends.  In disability care, we collaborate closely with other facilities.

About You

We are looking for someone who wants to make a difference for our clients and who has strong teaching skills. You are highly committed and eager to contribute to improving the quality of our services. You are attentive, flexible, solution-oriented, and have a positive demeanor; you are also skilled at communicating and collaborating with everyone you encounter in your daily work. Great importance is placed on personal suitability.

Requirements

• Post-secondary education consisting of at least 200 higher vocational education credits, a degree in special education, or other equivalent higher vocational education. Alternatively, 60 college credits in relevant courses related to disability care. Programs and/or courses with a clear focus on working with individuals with intellectual, cognitive, or mental disabilities. For example, in the following areas:

  - Ethical approaches

  - Educational theories and methods

  - Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

  - Cognitive support

  - Coaching approaches

• Several years of experience working with people with disabilities or other work experience that we consider equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with low-affect interaction (LAB), alternative and augmentative communication,

  (AAC), and Motivational Interviewing (MI)
