The Disability Services Department in the Municipality of Umeå aims to be a resource that, through proximity and interaction, empowers and strengthens people’s ability to live independent lives.

The facility is a group home under the LSS. Here, residents live in their own apartments and share

common areas. Currently, five people with various disabilities live here.

We are now looking forward to welcoming a support teacher to our team!

Your Responsibilities

Together with your colleagues, you will support individuals with disabilities. You will work to help them participate in a functional daily life and enjoy meaningful leisure time.

As a support teacher, you will use evidence-based educational methods to create a sense of security and structure in the daily lives of people with disabilities. You will guide staff in their client-centered work and actively contribute to quality development, documentation, and the onboarding of new colleagues. You are also part of a network of support educators where you have the opportunity to exchange experiences and engage in continuous professional development. You work on behalf of your manager, and your assignments may vary over time depending on the needs of the facility or facilities.

Nursing care is part of the job and may include, for example, personal hygiene, assistance with meals, cleaning and laundry, planning activities, accompanying residents to doctor’s appointments, medication administration, and documentation.

Important Information

  • There is disruptive behavior at the facility. Heavy lifting also occurs, and mobility aids are used.
  • Work hours are scheduled for days, evenings, and weekends. In disability care, we collaborate with other facilities.
  • There may be cats in the workplace, so you should not be allergic.

About you

We are looking for someone who wants to make a difference for the target group and who has strong teaching skills. You are highly committed and eager to help develop the organization. You are responsive, flexible, solution-oriented, and have a positive demeanor, as well as being skilled at communicating and collaborating with everyone you encounter in your daily work.

You need to be able to communicate clearly and directly with the clients, while also standing firm on decisions that have been made. At times, the pace can be fast, so it’s important that you can stay calm, manage stress effectively, and think quickly when needed. Great importance is placed on personal suitability.

In order to communicate with clients, colleagues, and other networks, write and review

care documentation, and receive medication delegation, you must have a good command of the

Swedish language, both spoken and written.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in the form of at least 200 higher vocational education credits, special education teacher training, or other equivalent higher vocational education. Alternatively, 60 college credits in relevant courses related to disability care. Programs and/or courses with a clear focus on working with intellectual, cognitive, or mental disabilities. For example, in:

    - Ethical approaches

    - Educational theories and methods

    - Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

    - Cognitive support

    - Coaching approaches

  • Several years of experience working with people with disabilities or other work experience that we consider equivalent

Desirable

  • Experience with low-affect interaction (LAB), alternative and augmentative communication,

    (AAC), and motivational interviewing (MI)
