The Disability Services Department in the Municipality of Umeå aims to be a resource that, through proximity and collaboration, empowers and strengthens people’s ability to live independently.

Istidsgatan 27 is an assisted living facility under the LSS. Fourteen residents with intellectual and physical disabilities of varying ages live here. All residents live in their own apartments and share common areas.

We are now looking for a new support educator for our facility—are you the one we’re looking for? 

Your Responsibilities

Together with your colleagues, you will support individuals with disabilities. You will work to help each person participate in a functional daily life and enjoy meaningful leisure activities.

As a support educator, you’ll use evidence-based educational methods to create a sense of security and structure in the daily lives of people with disabilities. You’ll guide staff in their direct work with residents and actively contribute to quality improvement, documentation, and the onboarding of new colleagues. You’ll also be part of a network of support educators where you’ll have the opportunity to exchange experiences and engage in continuous professional development. You’ll work under the direction of your manager, and your assignments may vary over time depending on the needs of the program(s).

Nursing care is part of the job and may include, for example, personal hygiene, assistance with meals, cleaning and laundry, planning activities, accompanying residents to doctor’s appointments, administering medication, and documentation.

The workplace may involve exposure to smoking, heavy lifting, and disruptive behavior.

To create a sense of security and stability for our residents and to manage disruptive behavior, it is important to follow procedures and collaborate within the work team.

Work shifts include day, evening, weekend, and on-call combinations. Joint planning takes place between our operations within Disability Care.

About You

As a person, you are calm and confident and find it easy to follow procedures. You have strong collaboration skills and maintain a professional demeanor toward clients, family members, and other stakeholders. You are committed and eager to share our values, work toward set goals, and strive for continuous improvement. You are naturally adept at creating and maintaining structure and contribute to the development of the organization. Great importance will be placed on personal suitability.

To communicate with clients, family members, and colleagues, write and review care documentation, and receive medication delegation, you must have a good command of the Swedish language, both spoken and written. 

Requirements

• Post-secondary education consisting of at least 200 YH credits, a degree in special education, or other equivalent higher vocational education. Alternatively, 60 college credits in relevant courses related to disability care. Programs and/or courses with a clear focus on working with individuals with intellectual, cognitive, or mental disabilities. For example, in the areas of:

  - Ethical approaches

  - Educational theories and methods

  - Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

  - Cognitive support

  - Coaching approaches

• Several years of experience working with people with disabilities or other work experience that we consider equivalent

Desirable

• Experience with low-affect interaction (LAB), alternative and augmentative communication,

  (AAC), and motivational interviewing (MI)

• Experience working as a special education teacher
• Training as a nursing assistant
