Youth Counselor, Prevention Unit
Umeå, Sverige
Type of Employment Full-time
Job position Social Worker
Work model On location
Application due date 16 August 2026
Are you the one?

The City of Umeå, in collaboration between Social Services and Ersängsskolan, has established an operational team that focuses on early and preventive interventions for students in need of support. The team consists of two staff members from the social services department’s prevention unit, two staff members from the school, and a coordinator from the student health services. You will be organizationally affiliated with the Social Services Department’s Prevention Unit, and your physical workplace will be at Ersängsskolan.

We are now looking for two youth counselors to join our team!

Your Responsibilities

Your role within the operational team, together with your colleagues, is to work collaboratively to ensure safety and a peaceful learning environment and to help increase student attendance at school. This work is carried out together with students but also in close collaboration with guardians, both individually and in groups. In this role, you are expected to work independently but also as part of a team to conduct preventive work and engage in goal-oriented efforts with students at Ersängsskolan. The ultimate goal of the operational team’s work is to increase achievement of educational goals and school attendance.

The operational team will conduct outreach at the school to build relationships with students for the purpose of early detection and prevention. Provide support to students individually at home or outside the classroom in cases such as problematic school absenteeism, where the team can help ensure students attend school. This support is provided in collaboration with guardians. Support may also be provided to students in groups based on general needs at the school—for example, work on core values aimed at counteracting social exclusion and increasing trust in society’s support systems, such as social services and the police, among others.

About You

We are looking for someone with a degree in social work and prior experience supporting children, youth, and their families. The position also requires a Class B driver’s license and a good command of the Swedish language, both spoken and written.

As a member of the operational team, it is essential that you are proactive, transparent, independent, and flexible in your work. At the same time, the position places high demands on your ability to collaborate, as it involves being part of a team and interacting with various agencies within social services, recreational programs, law enforcement, school staff, student health teams, students, and guardians. You are responsive and confident in your professional role, with the ability to make sound judgments and set priorities. Through your commitment and responsiveness, you build trust and foster relationships with various stakeholders through individual conversations or group settings. We place great emphasis on personal suitability in this recruitment process.

We warmly welcome your application!
