Company description

Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB, SKB, is working on one of Sweden's largest environmental protection projects. SKB's mission is to take care of all radioactive waste from the Swedish nuclear power plants. This must be done in a safe manner for both people and the environment.

Today, around 600 people are employed at SKB. We have extensive collaboration with experts and contractors outside the company.

SKB's head office is located in Arenastaden in Solna. We also have offices in Oskarshamn and Forsmark/Östhammar, where we have facilities and conduct various activities for the construction of a final repository for spent nuclear fuel.

About the role

At SKB, we work to take care of Sweden's spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. The task is largely pioneering and involves many complex challenges in research and technology development.

Together with your colleagues, you will contribute to the safe and sustainable management of Swedish spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste with little impact on people, climate and the environment. The work places high demands on safety thinking, collaboration skills and constructive solutions.

Are you ready for a big and important job that will make a difference for people and the environment for a very long time to come?

We are now looking for a driven and committed chemist to become our next subject expert on radionuclides in low and intermediate level waste.

Here you will work

You will work in SKB's Research and Development department. Together with experts from different scientific fields, you will work to manage and further develop the knowledge and methodology that forms the basis for the activity determination in the low and intermediate level waste. The radionuclide inventory is the input to our safety analyses of radiological risk. To succeed, we work in teams and in close collaboration with various sector, industry and research actors worldwide.

What you will do

  • Apply and develop new methods for the determination of radionuclides in low- and intermediate-level waste
  • Provide input to and participate in post-closure safety analyses for the final repositories for low- and intermediate-level waste
  • Provide expert support to the Swedish nuclear facilities and SKB:s operating facilities in waste-related issues with a focus on radionuclide content
  • Plan, commission, follow up and lead SKB-funded research and development in the field at universities, colleges and companies
  • Participate in international collaborations in the field
  • Formulate requirements on the waste regarding radionuclide content to enable safe disposal of the waste
  • Participate in SKB:s contacts with authorities
  • Write and review technical reports

Requirement specification

You have a higher university degree and preferably a postgraduate degree in chemistry with a relevant focus for the field of activity. As a person, you are analytical and creative and you have a willingness to develop your knowledge and skills to meet the current and future needs of the business. You are meticulous and take responsibility for the results that you and your team deliver. It is an advantage if you have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Reactor chemistry or nuclear chemistry
  • Characterization/measurement of difficult-to-measure nuclides
  • Simulation and modelling of chemical and physical processes
  • Programming

Your results will be documented in technical reports and presented to external stakeholders and authorities. You should therefore have good experience of presenting your results both orally and in writing.

Your results will also be reviewed both internally and externally, so you need to be able to both defend your results and take on board relevant criticism. The work requires good collaboration skills as you interact with other experts both within SKB and with external suppliers and partners.
