Company description

Enabling fossil-free solutions that drive society forward - that's our purpose. We are looking for talented students to help us on our journey towards decarbonization. Writing a thesis at Vattenfall gives you a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose.

The Plant Development unit at Vattenfall Electricity Distribution runs technical development projects that create time and cost efficiency with a focus on customers, safety and sustainability. We proactively develop the electricity network by setting requirements, developing and managing plant design documents, and technically reviewing plant projects.

About the role

Snow and ice loads are a recurring challenge for the electricity network in northern Sweden. Heavy snowfall and icing on overhead lines can cause sagging, mechanical damage and, in the worst case, power outages. To better understand and manage these risks, an ice load map has been developed showing where in the network outages have occurred due to snow and ice loads. The map is combined with data on line types, ground conditions and structures, which opens up for strategic analysis and preventive measures.

The purpose of the thesis is therefore to analyze how the ice load map can be used to identify risk zones in the electricity network and thereby improve operational safety. By linking outage data with technical and geographical factors, the work will provide a basis for, for example, prioritization, choice of construction and strategic planning. Proposed goals include identifying geographical patterns in the frequency of outages, evaluating how different types of lines and ground conditions affect the risk of outages, analyzing which structures are most vulnerable, how much the outages affect SAIDI (System Average Interruption Duration Index) and providing recommendations for how the ice load map can be used in operational planning and preventive maintenance. The work also opens up to see how, for example, other regions in the world solve the documentation of similar problems and whether it is possible to develop the map to include other incidents / interruptions.

About Vattenfall

At Vattenfall, we are committed to enabling fossil freedom. To succeed, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, we must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we need to do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.

Because we are convinced that we need to enable fossil freedom, we need to look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy in a sustainable way.

Join us on the road to fossil freedom.
