Company description
About us - Vattenfall Eldistribution and our team
Vattenfall Eldistribution AB is one of Sweden's largest electricity network companies and supplies electricity to approximately 900,000 private and business customers. We are in the middle of the energy transition and have a central role in the powerful electrification that is taking place in society. Our electricity network is about 130,000 km long and we are just over 1,500 employees who together build the electricity network of the future and operate a society-supporting infrastructure.
With us, you can be involved in influencing tomorrow's climate-smart society and creating the electricity network of the future. We believe that diversity and inclusion lead to innovation, improved business performance and increased engagement. We strive to represent the diversity of our customers and the communities in which we operate.
You will be part of the Plant Performance department, a key function in our digital transformation journey. The group consists of around 15 employees who monitor the status and risk exposure of our facilities. Through analysis and investigations, we evaluate deviations from expected delivery and performance at our sites. We work closely with operations, projects and maintenance and develop methods for predictive and status-based maintenance.
About the role
About the thesis
CNAIM (Common Network Asset Indices Methodology) is a methodology for assessing and reporting risks to network assets within electricity networks. The model is used to calculate the Probability of Failure (PoF) and the Consequence of Failure (CoF) for different asset types. In this thesis you will be tasked with evaluating whether the probabilities of failure calculated by the CNAIM model are consistent with the actual observations in our network.
The work involves:
- Analyzing and comparing the CNAIM calculated probabilities of failure with actual failure statistics from Vattenfall Elddistribution's network.
- Identifying any deviations and proposing improvements or adaptations of the model for Swedish conditions.
- Present results and conclusions in a report and oral presentation to the team.
You will have access to relevant data, guidance from experienced analysts and the opportunity to contribute to the development of future maintenance strategies.
Other possible degree projects in Plant Performance
In the department we have several issues that are of interest to investigate through a degree project. Therefore, in the field of performance, there are other possible themes to investigate within your thesis! Examples of other ideas are:
- Sensors and link between sensor signals and appliance health
- Business case for refurbishment of specific appliance types
- Build a database with a user interface for spare parts availability for different appliance types
- Business case for sensors for SF6 leakage
- Business case for PD measurement in substations
These opportunities give you the chance to contribute to the development of future maintenance strategies and developments in the electricity network industry. Are you more interested in writing your thesis in one of these areas? Then write in your application which area you are interested in writing a thesis in.

About Vattenfall
At Vattenfall, we are committed to enabling fossil freedom. To succeed, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, we must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we need to do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.
Because we are convinced that we must enable fossil freedom, we need to look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy in a sustainable way.
Follow us on the road to fossil freedom.
