Company description

Enabling fossil-free energy that drives society forward - that is our purpose. We are looking for talented students who want to help us on our journey towards fossil freedom By writing a thesis at Vattenfall, you get a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose.

About the role

The thesis will be carried out at the Plant Engineering unit in the Electric Power area, the unit is responsible for, among other things, analyzing, prioritizing and compiling the status and needs of the plant. With us, you will come to an exciting environment where we work together and during the thesis work you will collaborate with competent colleagues in the immediate group and also groupings from Forsmark's entire organization.

Today there is a gas turbine plant installed at Forsmark's nuclear power plant facilities that are in need of renewal. The plant was dimensioned according to the needs that existed when the production facilities were built and which today have changed significantly. The assignment consists of investigating the power requirements needed to support the production facilities and SvK's support service for frequency control, mFRR.

With Vattenfall's policy of fossil-free, the question of what type of fuel the future plant should be powered with also comes up.

The degree project is located at the intersection of technology, economics and sustainability strategies.

Goal/purpose:

  • Dimension the gas turbine plant in terms of power and what fuel can be used.
  • Identify technical and economic conditions.
  • Analyze what power the plant should be dimensioned for both against production plants and in case of disturbances in the electricity grid.

The assignment can be carried out by both one and two students.

About Vattenfall

At Vattenfall, we are committed to enabling fossil freedom. To succeed, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, we must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we need to do more than just focus on sustainable energy production. Because we are convinced that we must enable fossil freedom, we must look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy in a sustainable way.

Vattenfall is part of Sweden's critical infrastructure and our operations are subject to rules on security protection, nuclear non-proliferation and export control. Due to these rules, a check of the candidate is carried out for many of the positions in our operations before employment takes place. For those positions that lead to participation in security-sensitive activities or placement in a security class, this control means that security clearance is carried out in accordance with the Security Protection Act.
