Company description
Enabling fossil-free energy that drives society forward - that is our purpose. We are looking for talented students who want to help us on our journey towards fossil-free By writing a thesis at Vattenfall, you get a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose.
About the role
About the thesis
The Plant Development unit at Vattenfall Electricity Distribution runs technical development projects that create time and cost efficiency with a focus on customers, safety and sustainability. We proactively develop the electricity network by setting requirements, developing and managing plant design documents, and technically reviewing plant projects.
The majority of Sweden's electricity network at higher voltage levels (>20 kV) consists of overhead lines. Up to and including 170 kV, these overhead lines are usually built with poles of natural wood. One of the load cases that overhead lines are normally designed for is line breakage, which results in very large resultant forces on the poles in the direction of the line. Natural wood poles, on the other hand, are for historical reasons excluded from rope breakage calculations, which means that there is insufficient data on what would happen if this occurs.
The purpose of the thesis is therefore to establish a simulation model to simulate rope breakage on power lines using the load cases defined in the current standard. Components such as poles, joists, struts, etc. are modeled after manufacturing drawings provided by Vattenfall.
The resulting forces obtained in the simulation will be compared with the material properties of the components to be able to draw conclusions about possible fractures in the material. If time permits, suggestions will also be made on how the current design can be improved to better cope with flax breakage.
This assignment is for 1-2 students

Diversity and inclusion - in everything we do
We are convinced that heterogeneous teams can outperform homogeneous teams. But we can only unleash and use the power of diversity when everyone feels included. Read more about our important work with diversity and inclusion https://careers.vattenfall.com/se/sv/jobba-med-oss/mangfald-inkludering
About Vattenfall
At Vattenfall, we are committed to enabling fossil freedom. To succeed, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, we must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we need to do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.
Because we are convinced that we must enable fossil freedom, we need to look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy in a sustainable way.
Join us on the road to fossil freedom.
As Vattenfall is part of the Swedish critical infrastructure, many of our services are security classified. This means that, if this position is classified, the final candidates may be subject to a special security clearance in accordance with the Security Protection Act.
