Viscaria is facing something unusual in today's mining industry - restarting an underground mine. The copper mine in Kiruna is now to be put into operation under new management, and the company is in an expansive phase where both plant and working methods are being built up in parallel.
The mine is expected to be in production within two years, and the rock engineering group - which belongs to the Mining department - will be a central part of that work.
About the role and the group
You will be part of the rock engineering group, which is currently under construction. The group works broadly in both rock engineering and rock mechanics, with a clear responsibility for identifying, developing and implementing the working methods required for safe and efficient production.
The role involves an operational and technical responsibility where you work with:
Underground mapping and damage mapping
Development of rock reinforcement recommendations
Analysis and optimization of excavation sequences, including understanding of the mechanical behavior of the rock
Numerical and analytical calculations
You will work in close collaboration with both engineering and production, helping to ensure that technical decisions are of high quality and practicality.
An important part of the job is also to help establish routines and structures - and then ensure that they work in reality. This means that you not only develop methodology, but also follow up, adjust and adapt it based on how the business actually develops.
Your working day
The work is characterized by variety. Some periods involve more analytical work with models and long-term calculations, while other situations require quick actions linked to production.
The mine will be operated around the clock, which means that the work is closely linked to an operation that is always running.
The organization is at a stage where the pace is high and resources are focused on building up the business, which means that you are expected to be able to take responsibility and get into the work independently.
Requirements for the position
Civil engineering degree in civil engineering, with specialization in soil and rock engineering or equivalent rock mechanics
A minimum of eight years of experience working in rock mechanics
Good ability to work with both analytical calculations and practical applications
Fluent Swedish in speech and writing (technical level) and good knowledge of English
B-driving license
Experience from large infrastructure or mining projects where you have had independent technical responsibility is an advantage.
Personal qualities
The role requires both structure and adaptability. You need to thrive in an environment where conditions can change quickly and where there are not always ready answers.
We therefore look for you to:
Have the ability to switch between long-term analytical work and operational efforts
Be a creative problem solver who can identify multiple possible ways forward
Have a holistic perspective, while being able to go down to the level of detail when needed
About Viscaria
Viscaria offers an opportunity to work at a stage where a lot is still being shaped. It means a lot of responsibility, but also a real opportunity to influence both technology, working methods and results.
The organization is characterized by a flat structure with short decision-making paths, where you work closely with decision-makers and quickly see the impact of your work in the business.
What sets the role apart is the context - being involved in the start-up of an underground mine is unusual, and provides an opportunity to work broadly and develop skills in several areas of rock mechanics rather than being narrowly focused in a single function.
