Long traditions of fostering new knowledge and education

The city of Kiruna has a long tradition of fostering knowledge and education, ever since it was founded in the early 20th century. In 1910, one of Sweden’s first schools for vocational training was established here and has had a great impact on the education in the area. In Kiruna, you will find a great selection of daycares and schools in both the urban area as well as the surrounding villages.

Pre-schools and childcare

In Kiruna, there is a wide variety of pre-schools and other childcare options throughout the municipality. There are a total of 28 pre-schools, of which 22 are municipal pre-schools and 2 are run by the Sami school board.

In most pre-schools, activities are carried out with elements of the minority languages, Finnish and Meänkieli.

In addition to pre-schools, Kiruna offers other childcare options, including in-home pre-school education, where educated personnel offer pre-school for a group of children in the care of their own home.

Primary schools

The city of Kiruna hosts a total of 16 primary schools. In many of the primary schools, you will find after school youth recreation centers.

The geographical spread of the schools in Kiruna is vast. The distance to Kiruna's city center from the westernmost school, Abisko school, is approximately 100 kilometers, and the distance from the easternmost school, located in Karesuando, is approximately 180 kilometres. The large geographical spread of the population means that the municipality has several primary school options, wherever you choose to reside, with school size varying from approximately 15 students up to almost 750.
